Title: Lets talk racism.

Lee D'su - February 1, 2007 06:58 PM (GMT)
After the Big Brother row it seems peoples thoughts of what is racism varied, but what is racism. What would you call racism. Was what Jade said racism. It was only a name for christs sake. If someone says "He/she should fuck off home?" is this racist or just a statement.

Fitz - February 1, 2007 08:05 PM (GMT)
I thought what happened initially was bitching and bullying. What went afterwards crossed the line to racism, IMO.

What's the difference? Shilpa was called a dog, but surely it should have been a black/Asian etc. dog to be racist.

cuppy - February 1, 2007 08:16 PM (GMT)
I haven't seen any footage that has shown racism in my opinion. The bitching would have happened had Shilpa been white or coloured. People have homed in on certain things, ie, the mocking of an indian accent, but how many times do you use a mock geordie accent or scouser, irish, scottish? Its the mocking of a person, not a race of people. The same could be said of the picking of the food with fingers, I wouldn't like someone I dont know rummaging around my plate with their fingers.

Jody Marsh from last years Celeb BB was truly bullied last year, I mean an awful lot more than anything that went on in this years, yet it go know media attention, why? Cos she is white.

I've heard a lot of different peoples discussions on this topic, not the media ones, who have to been seen to show a one sided view....am talking everyday people....and I seriously worry that things like this, what I class as "playing the race card" is causing bigger rifts underneath, and I seriously believe that this undermines the real efforts to remove true racism in our society.

I agree with a lot of what you've said Cuppy. There were comments made by the 3 girls which, when taken out of context, could have been deemed racist, but I don't think they were meant that way. Even Danielle's 'I wish she would fuck off home' comment I think was meant at face value and she looked horrified when it was read back to her. If she had stopped the bitching at that point like she supposedly intended I don't think she would be in half the trouble she's in now. Jade I think is just inarticulate and aggressive and Jo stated on her pre BB interview that she wanted to stir things up a bit, Well she didn't let us down on that one.

My view of racism is bad treatment of somebody because of their race/colour/creed. If we are no longer able to question or criticise anyone irrespective of their race, then equality will no longer exist.

Carlo Algatrensig - February 1, 2007 11:04 PM (GMT)
Okay so a national newspaper that panned Jade Goody for calling Shilpa Shetty, Shilpa Poppadom in the same week had a headline in their sport section about the snooker player Ding Junhui that was "Pot Noodle" now surely this paper was just using the streotype of chinese people eating noodles in the same way as Jade used the word poppadom as an indication of her assumptions of indian people. so was this paper actually being as racist as any of the contestants on celebrity big brother.

Milgod - February 1, 2007 11:06 PM (GMT)
I think it could certainly have been taken as racist, but in all honesty it was just pure ignorance on the most part. The media whipped everyone into a frenzy over this and thats what has caused all the problems. Like Cuppy said Jodi Marsh was bullied last year just as bad. I don't think its because Jodi is white that there wasn't an uproar, but more the fact that nobody really liked Jodi Marsh in the first place.

What gets me most about people like Jade (and it seems likes endless teenagers nowadays) is that they seem to revel in the fact they are stupid and ignorant. It drives me bloody crazy I tell thee.

Lee D'su - February 1, 2007 11:07 PM (GMT)
Does anyone think that the newspapers and press are shit scared of being called racist themselves and therefore shout it at other people. ie. If they never called Jade racist, would people think they condoned it, so therefore she was a racist.

I've felt that with every interview I have seen since they came out. The Davina ones, and the GMTV ones, the interviewers just seemed so scripted. Like whatever their personal views, they had to appear too denounce them. Definatly a case of no one wanting to be tarred with the same brush!

Lee D'su - February 1, 2007 11:26 PM (GMT)
Another thing that needs to be debated is that it is not illegal to be racist, yet it seems to be one step up from a paedophile. I hope they invite Nick Griffin next year.

At the same time CBB was going on, a gang of eight Asians ambushed a white schoolboy of 15, held him down and beat his head with a hammer. Fractured skull, lucky not to be dead.

Squeeky clean BBC made no mention of race what so ever in their report, even though the papers said it was racially motivated. I fucking hate the BBC, it is a dinosaur that needs putting to sleep.

That to me is racism.

CBB? Name calling, six foot up your own arse wannabees.

I thought the Davina / Jade interview was tame - funny how they both have the same agent (and a few of the Management of BB are also connected with the agent).

At the end of the day an unknown Bollywood actress has now achieved world-wide fame - watch out for a Hollywood Blockbuster in the cinema's soon with her as the leading star!

I never watch the programe and got snips of it. But from my point of view it was out and out Bullying. But then again when the line "She should Fuck off home" is used I feel it was Racism as they would not tell anyone one else to go home, it was out of order.

Shilpa was a Bollywood star of the past and has not had any success lately and neither is she likely to in Bollywood, but after this programe she will get some parts in various programes.

I could rant on for hours about this but I'll just say as a white, working class, tax paying, law abiding (most of the time) family man I feel in the minority at times.

I agree in that I thought Jo got far more of a grilling, especially considering Jades was the worst of the outbursts.

morley white - February 3, 2007 08:41 AM (GMT)
the one thing that has really pissed me off of late was when last year a chap i know of got battered the police investigated a "street crime" by a group of asians.

when incredably these same asians themselves were attacked a few weeks later the police investigated a "race attack" by a group of white guys.

i think this sort of action can almost breed a feeling of resentment towards certain groups.

aksattee - February 3, 2007 09:58 AM (GMT)
This is what I hate about the Media and Authorities. The Race issue goes both ways and not just one sided. Classic example was the Bowyer/Woodgate Trial. Even after the Judge said it was not a racially motivated attack, The media still kept harping on about it. It got to the extent that it involved the lawyer who was involved in Stephen Lowrance case because all of a sudden he was the best lawyer regarding the RAcial issues.

Interesting to see that Jermaine is now to be questioned by the police over his "white trash" comment.

What is racism, it seems to be something that whites are only capable of being. That's not what I think but how it comes across.
I live in a small town, we have asians, eastern europeans and many many British, I haven't seen any problem with all of us living in harmony. I don't know of any "racist"problems. There may be but I'm not aware of them. Working in the library I get them all, asians are always wary when they first come in but relax shortly after as they see they are treated no different than anyone else. I've helped lots of them with government forms as their english is not quite up and they are so thankful and polite, I could never feel anything racist towards them. As time goes by they open up and most will say they lived in Toronto when they first got here and they hated it because it was just like back home, none of them integrated with other cultures, here they blend in and feel they've found a home and a great place to raise their children.
I think a lot of the problems with immigrants in the cities are they don't integrate, they stick to their own, in my opinion if we don't integrate we never really know what a person is trully like, we have pre-set ideas, mostly wrong. People are people no matter what race they are, given a chance and treated with respect they all turn out to be people who have a lot to offer our communites, they learn from us, we learn from them.

I agree on the intergration part mmal. We have a few asian families living close to us but they don't seem to want to be apart of the community. One family run the off licence nearby and Ian on a numerous occasions has tried to involve them in the community stuff he does, but its like getting blood from a stone. Very often if you go into buy something they will switch languages as soon as you get to the counter, talk amongst themselves, and barely afford you the time of day. I don't know whether because they are in the minority they feel unable to integrate, or whether its just a case of them not wanting too. But its a shame.

Well racism is perceived opinion about what somebody/persons may have said about them or their peer group, some people tend to blow it out of proportion and others just shrug their shoulders..

Personally I think it's a load of nonsense and I'll merit anybody on how they are with me irrelevant to what Relgious beliefs they have..
