Title: Smoking ban

Milgod - February 6, 2007 05:13 PM (GMT)
Finally it's within sight (well 5 months away doesn't seem like that long). I can't wait til the day I cam go into a pub and not come out stinking of smoke. The government gets a hard press at times, but they got this one right.

Are any rebelly smokers going to use it as a prompt to give up?

Most pubs have at least two rooms, a Bar and a Lounge, I see no reason why one or the other cant be used by 'Smokers'. The ruling doesnt affect me at all btw, but I think that smoking is a personal choice, and if people want to do it, then they can.

Milgod - February 6, 2007 05:19 PM (GMT)
The problem is that people usually go with the smokers (even if they don't like it) because smokers are too selfish to not have a fag for a few hours until they get home.

I'm a non-smoker but it is going to have an affect on me in that no doubt tax will increase on alcohol and petrol to make up the shortfall.

Still I can always drink less and walk more I suppose?

Milgod - February 6, 2007 05:24 PM (GMT)
I don't mind about the tax. I don't drink that much and don't drive.

i agree that some pubs should be totally smoke free so that there is an option for those who dont want to be subjected to second hand smoke, but i strongly opose a blanket ban in all bars.

i am a member of a private club, a club where in a recent poll, 97% of members (that is 97% of members and not 97% of those that voted) stated they felt a ban in this club was not necessary. so why should they have to ban smoking?

Mugsey - February 6, 2007 05:55 PM (GMT)
seen as i have lived through the implementation of the same ban in ireland it hought that i might as wellend me 2 cents worth, any decent pub will use this as a great excuse to do up their beergarden enclosing some of it with a veranda type covering and placing heaters elsewhere in the garden.

While i do still go out with me mates for the odd cig, as i smoke usually when drinking, it works quite well for me as i have cut down a bit as i am not surrounded by smoke and don't need to succumb to the temptation as often(even though i should fucking no better than training me hole off 3-5 times a week only to puff it away) as i once did. It also works well for those who hate smoke as they just stay inside, and while this can lead to a splintering of large groups of friends such is life unfortunately as when one hopes to please all you usually end up pleasing no-one at all.

On the real upside i don't need to clean me clothes as often now :lolanimate:

As a non smoker I agree smokers should have a choice to smoke, but I should have the choice not to smoke. I believe public areas should be smoke free, but designated rooms for smokers (and thats closed off rooms, none of this invisible divide where smoke is jsut expected to know it shouldn't cross it)

Like most Non Smokers I agree with the Ban. But at the same time also agree that Smokers should have a choice but similarily they should be cnsiderate of the Non Smokers and the second hand smke.

Our office is Non Smoking yet People are allowed to go out and stand out side and have a Cig. It really annoys me that people are allowed to do that and so many blatantly abuse this. I have seen people go out for a smoke at about 11.30 and come back in the office after 15- 20 minutes and then go out for Lunch. Yes the Non smokers do not get ta Non Smoking break do they. The offices need to implement 100% no Smoking durin working hours.

Smoking breaks are a joke. Just because somebody can't wait until lunchtime to have a cigarette why should they be allowed to stop working? I have decided that I can't go very long without have a fresh air break so think I should be allowed out for a 10 minute stroll every hour.

I agree with this statement totally just ebcause one has an addiction to something does not mean you should be allowed off of work to feed this addiction, though i am lucky in that respect as i am addicted to oggling young women and our place is always full of them.

Smokers should be used for labratory testing and enclosed in containers where scientists can test them on such things as: monoxide exposure within a confined space, perfumery tests and bird flu.. then they should be removed and incarcinated at extreme temperatures for contributing billions of tax money to the treasury!

In fact I think we should start a civil war and shoot anybody who even smells of cigarettes!

JOB DONE..

I gave up smoking quite a few years ago was but always tempted to smoke when I went out for a few bevvies. I'm glad about the smoking ban as I will no longer have the temptation of others around me smoking. I also hate smelling of smoke when I get home and will not miss the dry throat that I always get when I go into a busy pub.

I started smoking when I wa 24, no particular reason and sometimes I go several days without a smoke, I generally only buy packets of 10 although when I go out or to footy then I smoke loads and loads and loads!

The ban will be a good thing for moi..

Smoking in pubs and restaurants has been banned in Ontario for 5 yrs or more, never being a smoker I quite liked the change, hubby being a smoker decided to quit, he felt like a pariah, so all in all it was a good thing. Most have gotten use to it a lot have quit not wanting to stand outside at -40 for a smoke.

Leeds Hospitals banned smoking in their buildings and grounds last August, but you can still see the brain donors stood right outside of the main doors at LGI and Jimmy's not thinking about their noxious fumes drifting back into the buildings.

Even the hospital security staff can't be bothered to do anything about it. What a complete waste of NHS money that project was!

I stopped smoking (AGAIN!!) at the end of October 2006. My girlfriend still smokes but at home she's exciled to the dining room with the patio doors open and the cooker extractor fan on.

I have just started with the dirty, dirty smokers line to help keep me on the staight and narrow and can now go to pubs and not give a second thought about smoking. I was going to wait until July this year to stop as I felt it would be easier to break the beer and fags association but I seem to have done it OK. I just need the girlfriend to quit now though as when I get home from the pub, even though I have no inclination to smoke in the pub, her ciggies are calling out my name and taunting me and to my shame I have surrendered once.

I cant believe I quit for 8 years and started again, but hopefully i've cracked it this time.

Never stop giving up - you know it makes sense.

Milgod - March 20, 2007 03:30 PM (GMT)
Not much over 3 months left now, any smoking rebs started to give up yet? Or are you trying to smoke as much as possible until July when you can't anymore (in the pub)?
