Title: Great Britons

Milgod - February 14, 2007 04:33 PM (GMT)
Not that this is controversial or anything, but I was just looking at the top 100 lists that various countries did of their Greatest people. Just wondering what people thought the top Britons were, say name your top 3.

When the show came out the public’s top 3 were - Churchill, Brunel and Diana.

I guess that’s where a public vote isn't always the best way. I cannot possibly see how Diana was ahead of people like Newton, Shakespeare etc. Reagan came top of the US poll, crazy stuff.

If i had to list any of that were great I am pretty sure Churchill or Diana wouldn't be on there though I might have a place for Shakespeare, Guy Fawkes(for his idealism and efforts to change a very corrupt & preudiced society by the only means he knew how), Jane Austen & perhaps Cressie might sneak into the list if he can save us.

Who would be your top Irish?

I still don't get the Diana thing. OK, she was a nice lady and volunteered her time to good causes but so do a hell of a lot of people.

The greatest living Englishman - Richard "Diamond Geezer" Littlejohn.

My top Irish now there is a great question Keane hasd to be respected in terms of what he achieved ibnthe sporting field but Michael Collins is probably number one for aiding the nation achieve a degree of Independence. Other than notable irish people include James Joyce, W.B. Yeats, Charles Syewart Parnell, Seán Lemass and David Healy can sneak on al;ong with Kelly & Douglas if they can keep us up.

Sorry mate but Michael Collins was a murderer and a terrorist of his generation, he set traps/ambushes, wore a balaclava and basically killed people with guns and bombs, OK he was fighting for his 'cause' but not in conventional terms!

if he had of fought in conventional terms he would have led 3,000 armed out to face one of the most disciplined and largest armies in the world in what would have proved a useless bloodbath that would've led only to further generations of hatred and murder, and quite possibly an occurence where Ireland as an island would now be in the state which the North f the Island was in for quite a number of years.

but hey I knew that we weren't all gonna agree on this but sure so what that's life.

It's hard, I find it difficult to name just one or even a top three. Its like the films thread, the top list would change day by day.

However, if I had to name a top three now it would be

Newton, Brunel, Darwin in no particular order.

Top three Americans - Washington, Lincoln, Franklin (again in no order)

top Irish would be a lot harder for me. The Lucky Charms leprechaun would be right up there.

smartarse with your racist remarks against us Irish.

in retaliaiton my favourite 3 maricans would have to be Geronimo, Sitting Bull & Red cloud because after all the rest of ye are just another occupying force who overrun a nation, rich in natural resources, armed with lesser weapons than yourselves, not that anything like that would ever happen nowadays of course.

you knows I was only joking me Irish friend.

You do bring up a good point though. What critera must you have to make the list? Alexander Graham Bell made the US, Canadian and Bitish lists. (bornin UK, moved to Canada -where he is buried, but became a US citizen and did most of his work there).
In the British list they had Bono and Geldof (not sure how they qualify?).
