Title: Monarchy

Milgod - February 15, 2007 09:23 AM (GMT)
OK, so it un-British to speak against the monarchy, its part of the heritage blah blah blah.
Is there really any need for it anymore? They do nothing for the country and get paid for it. Could we not abolish with the monarchy and just put the whole royal family in a museum. At least that way we could keep some money coming in from tourists.

Believe it or not i'd be in favopur of keeping them It's nice to have some degree of tradition and such in a country and the British tradition is connected to their monarchy to i'd say keep the useless feckers.

Should have added a Not Bothered option as well Millie.

As I also fall in to that category.

CWINNIT - February 15, 2007 01:43 PM (GMT)
Nope!

They're part of our tradition, nowadays they have a busy scheduled going to many charitable events and the vast majority of Brits are proud of our heritage/history..

Royalists winning so far. Personally I would like the Monarch to have their previous powers restored.

Then we could have Blair beheaded with his minging wife and shove the rest of the cabinet in the Tower of London.

Sorted.

Whisper it quietly but I'm proud to be from Yorkshire, I'm proud to be English, and I'm proud to be British.

It's time we were able to claim back the Cross of St George without being branded a racist, BNP supporting bone head.

God Save the Queen means a lot to me - always makes the hairs stand on end. The Monarchy is a way for Britain to show it's heritage and is a reminder of our history (both good and bad). I'm all for it.

morley white - February 16, 2007 09:45 PM (GMT)
the history of britain is set in stone, hence why it is history, and cant be changed. The royal family on the other hand are an out dated icon that most people cant relate to and fewer even care about.

we have enough history in this country to keep attracting the tourists, most dont come here to see the queen, they come to see parliment, buck house, tower of london, etc.

this would continue with our without that out of touch family.

the heritage of this country is safe, the standing of this country on the world stage is safe, many many hospitals would be safe if it were not for this parasitic greek/german family that so many seem to think add to our personna.

get rid asap.......they serve zero purpose!!!!

I don't mind people voicing their opinion but you're suggesting this is fact when it's not.

ok, i'll accept i cant prove that to be fact, i can only speak for the people i know/ mix with work wise.

i'd love to see a nation wide poll of this topic, as i'm pretty sure that not many people really care.

I'm in favour of keeping the Royal family.

In my teens i did have a period were i was quite an anti royalist but then as I've got older I've realised that they are something that we should be proud of as it is something that makes up our country.

One of the other things that make me want to keep them is what would be the alternative.

President Tony Blair. No thankyou.

northernwhites - February 17, 2007 05:07 AM (GMT)
I like the Royal Family, but I dont think that the tax-payer should have to subsidise them in any way neither.

So im a bit indifferent , spose.

Thats the whole argument I don't get. If they had been the same family for 1000 years then I could see the tradition, but they change constantly over time.

I don't see why the taxpayer should pay for them when I can't see anything they do for me.

Firstly people go on about them getting paid to do bugger all. What a load of rot that is. These people are on show 24 hours a day, they can't have an off day...their whole lives are structured around serving this country.....visits here, visits there, this speech, that dinner. There's no saying, nah don't feel like going out on remembrance day....i'll stay in bed. They are hounded wherever they go and have to smile and just get on with it. Sorry but I wouldn't want that for no amount of money.

They do a hell of a lot of work for charity....people go on about what Diana did for charity but disregard the input other members have. Prince Charles used his own retirement money when he retired from the military to set up the Princes Trust which has been a fantastic charity for young people. Princess Anne was a huge participant for "Save The Children".

As for being outdated, I think Prince William and Harry have given the monarchy a more modern feel. Hell how old is the Queen? In her 80s, of course she is going to be out of date.....everyones grandma is!

Like it or not their is still a HUGE interest in the Royal Family, and I felt a big sense of pride in my country when I saw the footage of moments like this

You may suggest it yes, people think of the money and the wealth, but as I said I wouldn't have their life for no amount of money. Yeah you do financially extremely well out of it, but you are owned. Sorry, I but a hell of a lot more value on my freedom than money and property, no matter how large.

the problem to me is that they have no impact on my life and are too detached from me. As a person they mean absolutely nothing to me. They dont touch my life, i dont theirs. so really, I cant have a passion for something that does not impact on me in anyway. Take the death of Diana. Yes is was a tragedy, but, if I am honest, it MEANT nothing to me. My pet dying would have more impact on me. I am not being horrible here, just state what I feel. What also annoyed me about her death, was the floods of tears for a person the majority never met or had any real dealing with her. People were reacting as if a family member had passed away....

Milgod - February 19, 2007 05:14 PM (GMT)
To me, the Diana outpour of love was crazy. I couldn't believe how many people all of a sudden loved her. It was sad yes, but as GB says many other things have upset me more. It really was like people had lost their mother the way the country reacted.

CWINNIT - February 24, 2007 02:56 PM (GMT)
OK.. waiting for the order to go and hunt down some Catholics (inbred peasants)..

Anyone with me on this?

This also shocked me, but I remember hearing about her death in the way that many would recall the same about Elvis or JFK. I was stunned. I watched the funeral although I'm not really sure why. I was amazed that so many people were so upset by her death and I think it was maybe a reaction gauged by the way the media portrayed her as a saint, after baying for her blood for so long before her death.
The royal family reacted badly to her death by shunning her when her marriage was engineered in order to create their own popularity.
