Title: Independence.

Lee D'su - April 1, 2007 12:23 PM (GMT)
Every time the English get asked about Scottish and Welsh independence we hear the "You couldn't afford to" argument. Yet we, in Wales, are to have free prescriptions as from tomorrow, as you English based rebels will be paying and extra 20p making it £6.80. This is within the budget the assembly has set, and is down to good management.

Nudger - April 1, 2007 07:47 PM (GMT)
i just dont think you should be a independent

Not from me you wouldn't.

As far as I'm concerned Northern Ireland, Wales, and Scotland should be given independence. True independence mind you, where what's yours is yours and anything else you need to buy.

Infact I'd stretch it further and allow English counties to go independednt as well. Set up some accountability and ownership amongst people living in their own community. None of this whining about post code lotteries or North/South divide - if you really care about where you live do something about it.

I hate bleeding heart socialists and these do-gooders who think we have to put systems in place to cover the minorities and igmore the majority.

What happens is that these systems become over stretched as a result of having to cope with so many anomolies that the whole thing falls apart - meaning failure to provide even the most basic services for the majority AND the minority.

Maybe Pareto wasn't such a dumb f*ck after all....

I agree with RHS in that I would like to see the home nations become independant countries again. The majority of people think of them as nation states anyway. Its scary how many people don't realise that they are not independant countries but actually part of the UK.

I would just be nice if Wales could become a country again let alone have independence. I dont like the tag principality as it means that we belong to another state.

Saying that though, I believe we would be stonger together than standing alone and theres no reason why we cant remain together and have regional "governments" in much the same way as america does.

The thing is people think of Scotland, Wales & NI as countries when in fact they aren't. Not in the sense of what a country used to be. They are all just constituent parts of the UK. The word country is used for Scotland for example but it isn't one in the traditional sense. The amount of people that don't realise that is beyond belief. The best argument people seem to come up with is that they have to be countries as they have their own football teams!

I say have all the home nations as individual nation states, then people can stop complaining!

Bloody right, let it go back to a 32 county Republic. You can keep Paisley, though, its only fair......

Yes, I am aware of that but that was just a ruse by the english to wrestle control of these fair shores for themselves. And as I said, I believe we are stronger together as one state than we would be individually, but that doesnt mean we couldnt have regionally devolved governments with one overall controlling body. I know we already have councils that are supposed to be a kind of devolved government but they are very restricted by the government. Perhaps they just need to be given more control as the american states are. Mind you, its hard enough to find a handful of people capable of running the country let alone a hat full of them!!

I'm sure we could have had it solved in no time Fitz. I don't know what these politicians have been playing at for all these years.

Stubbsy - May 9, 2007 09:17 PM (GMT)
Should be given independence and allowed to govern themselves. I don't agree with the "they can't afford to" argument, if it means more money for England then so be it.

Well I actually like us all being as one, I've always classed english, scots, welsh and irish together, we should be united together but people are forever wanting independance rather than uniting together, makes me quite sad. But if any or all dont want to be joined together then let em go I say, but its just gonna cause further divide amonst neighbours that should be close.

Irish????????????? I hope by that you mean northern irish in fact i don't care what you meant by it it's quite simple we are a seprate nation with our own right to independence as are Scotladn and Wales this whole union thing was brought about by a power hungry Henry VIII and is way outdated, we are in the EU together that is close enough for me thank you very much.
