Funnily enough Oldham are in a reasonable bit of form at the moment, and their away record is only two goals and three points worse than ours, so perhaps the result is not as clear cut as many predict. In fact Oldham have only conceded ten goals away from home, and with four of those coming in the 4-1 defeat at Hartlepool our strikers will need to take their chances as they come. That said they are one of the highest penalty scoring/conceding teams having scored and conceded four. They have a fairly poor record from the free kick situation with just one goal coming from that source this season - perhaps a bit surprising with Shez as manager?
Today we will see a rare beast indeed. With 59 fouls, Craig Davies has committed the same number of fouls as Tresor and is thus the equal highest offender in the division. I presume that the vast majority of these are offsides.
Our first ref of 2008 is occassional visitor (and yet another PL ref slumming it) the occasionally controversial Mark Clattenburg who has recently dropped some real clangers and has a reputation that would make McDermid blush. There are online petitions to have him sacked

| We the undersigned ask the the Football Association to ban Mark Clattenburg for life from refereeing in the Premier League, Mr. Clattenburg during the derby encounter between Everton and Liverpool made unprofessional mistakes that changed the outcome of the encounter dramatically, he gave a penalty for a foul committed outside the box, he gave a red card to the Everon defender after the Liverpool player told him something (replay showed how he was holding the yellow card before taking the red card out of his pocket after the Liverpool player telling him something), he gave a yellow card to the Liverpool player after his unsportsmanlike tackle on the Everton player, a tackle according to the rules should result a direct red card, and in the dying moments of the game he refused to give a penalty to Everton after an obvious foul on the Everton player inside the box.Remarkably similar viewpoints citing corruption or incompetence |
Whereas the contrary view is held by the blues....

Mark Clattenburg displayed excellent refereeing in the Merseyside derby. Petition: We support Mark Clattenburg to be knighted for his services to football.

From the Daily Smearer

Mark Clattenburg was hailed as the best ref in football on the day he came up with the recipe for a real cake-up at Goodison Park.
Graham Poll, writing in his 'Official Line' newspaper column, named him at the top of his profession.
"Watch out for Mark Clattenburg at the Merseyside derby. He has already controlled the Manchester and north London derbies successfully and has been proclaimed as England's best referee in the Official Line all season," wrote Poll.
But that was before the man from Gosforth stirred it up with a series of dodgy decisions which enraged Everton boss David Moyes and the blue half of Merseyside.
Advertisement Last night Clattenburg was awaiting possible FA action for his Goodison blunders, and it could include a ban. Rob Styles was suspended for one game earlier this season after incorrectly awarding a penalty to Chelsea at Liverpool in August.
But Everton fans had bigger things in mind.
Last night nearly 200 had signed an internet petition calling for a life ban.

Mind you, he's not all bad....
| QUOTE |
Fergie explained his dismissal to the stands by saying some referees do not like the truth.
He said: “There were late tackles and I can’t believe some of the things that were going on.
“I thought there were two or three very dodgy tackles and you hope the referee is strong in those situations.
“I made my feelings known to the referee and he did not like it. Some referees don’t like the truth.

So with another strategically shaved baboon appointed to referee at Elland Road, will it be the players or Poll's protoge that takes the headlines in the aftermath?
