Just thought this snippet from today's Advertiser may be of interest. For the rest of the article go to:

"THE real estate industry is urging the State Government to exempt first home buyers from paying stamp duty on properties valued under $240,000.

The sector describes existing stamp duty concessions as "farcical", claiming they are only benefiting a handful of first home buyers a month.

The Real Estate Institute of SA is also urging the Government to slash stamp duty rates across the board. Only properties valued at less than $130,000 are exempt from stamp duty for first home buyers, even though the average house price in Adelaide is about $250,000.

The buyer of a $250,000 home pays about $8955 in stamp duty."

Some things certainly don't seem to change from England to Australia :sigh:

I think they should make the ceiling $300,000. NSW has done it already up to $500,000, so taking into account the regional differences in house prices, i think $300,000 is comparible and fair.
