Thank you for your e-mail. As from 10/11/03, applicants for a South
Australian drivers licence who hold, or have held within the preceding five
years, an overseas drivers licence from an approved country (of which the UK
is deemed approved) are exempt from the requirement to undertake and pass a
practical driving test for basic car and motor cycle classes only.

However, all overseas licence holders will continue to be required to
undertake and pass a road rules test before the issue of a South Australian
driver's licence.

To obtain a South Australian Driver's Licence, you will need to attend a
Customer Service Centre for the written test (cost is $21.00).

Hi Delboy

It seems you just have to take the practical test if you already have a full bike licence.

I had a go yesterday without reading up on the Oz Highway Code and only just failed, so with a bit of practise it should be no problem (he hopes!!!!!!).

Hello Steve.

I hope you meant to say just the theory

not the practical

Cant be stuck in a car in oz summer :sign20:

I queried this for some of you with the dept of transpost a couple of months ago. You just have to take the theory test.

Julia - May 3, 2004 07:00 PM (GMT)
Yep, just the theory. And from how that email reads it's the same theory test as for a car - just basic road rules.

Julia :)

Hi Delboy
Looks to me like they've just given you the standard reply - there's no specific mention of bike on there at all. I can only assume that if your licence covers bike in the uk then the Oz one will just bring all that straight over - shame they couldn't confirm in so many words though - why do these people never read the question properly <_<

When you're ready, you go into their offices, pay up, do the theory test and if you pass you pay up again and get a licence straight away. If you fail the theory you can take it again straight away - so long as (you've guessed it!) you pay up again....

It would be nice to know for sure though.

....but wait... I met a guy last night who came out from uk 2 years ago and rides a bike... I should see him again next monday so can ask him!!!

Elaine

it does mention bikes. If you read the type in red on Delboys posts it says motorcycles

Elaine - May 4, 2004 05:39 AM (GMT)
Aha well spotted PP! I can't see for looking
actually I was hurrying a bit this morning as I had a job interview with an agency so probably should have left it till now and looked more closely.

Anyway Delboy, looks like PP has wrapped it all up - you're ok on the motorcycle front just having to do the theory test. Have you looked at the RAA site to try out your SA theory skills yet

no worrie elaine

how did the interview go?

Elaine - May 4, 2004 07:48 AM (GMT)
Well the agency have put me on their books, I've been quizzed for 2 hours and did some quite fascinating tests on Word and Excel - I even managed to correctly answer questions on aspects I'd never used before, like creating macros, which I was pretty chuffed about  They were very cleverly set so that you gradually work from the simpler things - like make this text bold - to the more complex stuff - like one or two in Excel I'd never even heard of and had to pass on!

Now it's just a case of wait and see. I've already had an email back from a friend in the uk who's already received a request for a reference and was about to reply to it!

The other two agencies I emailed just sent me standard email replies saying they'd look at my cv and let me know if they were interested, Julia Ross actually got a real person to ring me and book an interview so they definitely made a good first impression on me - hope that goes both ways!

I shall let you know whether anything comes of it!

I agree completely!!!
Even though I got the right answers to the questions on the test I am not actually sure that I can estimate 50 metres or 250 metres or whatever. Mind you I always used to think that about stopping distances in the uk too.

The questions that really got me on the theory test here are all the ones about what mistakes new drivers are most likely to make and what percentage do so, that sort of thing. Seems so irrelevant to my own actual ability to drive here!

All the best, I'll try and ask Matthew about his bike when I see him next Monday.

Does any one have the link to the online theory practice test?

I've looked in the links section and couldn't see it, but then again i may be as blind as a bat!!

Thanks Sasha,

Just tried it out, passed the multi choice section but got 1 wrong on the give way section, so would have failed.

Will have to keep on practicing.

Are these the same questions that appear in the test?

hi Lisa
Yes, they are precisely the same questions that you take on the test. Seriously, it really is nothing to worry about so long as you've done your homework and practiced on the RAA one a few times. When I did it for real I only got 1 wrong! If I can do it anyone can.
