Title: Shipping stuff before we arrive
Description: problem ?
Annette - August 5, 2005 09:07 AM (GMT)
Hi everyone,
We've had some estimators around this week for the shipping quotes and yesterday the man from John Masons told us that our stuff can't arrive in Adelaide before us, as we have to be physically present in the country before it can be cutoms cleared and inspected. Is this right? None of the other guys mentioned it?
We are planning to pack and ship our stuff on the 5th of September, but we're only arriving there on the 9th of January next year. We were planning to have it stored of course, but were told by a lot of people, including both other estimators we saw in person, that it's cheaper to store in Adelaide. I'm thoroughly confused now.
Anyone else done this and what are your experiences please?
Annette

Hi Annette
I don't know where they have got that idea from. We were just asked for an address of where the stuff could be delivered to upon clearance. They also said it was possible for storage.
My things are due in to the port on 20th August and we don't land until 30th so I certainly won't be there. They said they will just ring us to say it has arrived and when it will be delivered and if there was any changes at our end just keep them updated.
I hope this helps. Don't know if anyone else knows different.
How did you find John Masons?
The person that came to our house only spent 10 mins here and when questioned if that was it he said yes when you have been in the business for 25 years you know what you are doing. Needless to say we didn't go with them.
Speak to you soon
Julia

You will need an address here Annette - one of us can let you use ours, I've done it for a couple of people it's no hassle you just get a letter when the stuff comes in and have to ring the people it belongs to, to tell them it's here
I wonder what Gils of the Mann Clan did? They did a long cruise here, I wouldn't be surprised if their stuff was here before them.

Annette one company offered us free - 8 weeks storage in the UK before it sails - I know it wouldn't be long enough but couldn't you have a word and see if they will do you a deal. Can't check until monday which company it was but let me know if you want to know
Good luck
Jeanette

Hello Annette.
John Mason's came to ours yesterday after yours.
How did you find them? I thought he was really efficient and he answered all my questions. We will just have to see what price he comes up with.
I'm sorry but I can't answer your question, but all the shipping company's I have seen so far say that they definitley need an address before they can ship the stuff.
We've only just accepted an offer on our house and don't know how it will go yet.
It is a bit frustrating not to have dates because we can't book flights yet (don't want to tempt fate) and until we have dates we can't book OAA (which I know is very scarce and there is a good chance there won't be any left when we arrive)
So, I am worrying that if we have no place of abode what address are we going to give them.
When it is all sorted out we are going to have an holiday on the Gold Coast for 2 weeks before heading down to Adelaide.
With all this stress we need a break and time to get over the jet lag before having to do all the sorting out in Adelaide.
Have a great holiday Annette, will see you in January.
Julie

Hi Annette
We had Anglo Pacific round yesterday for a quote and they said the same, that you have to have an address in Adelaide to send your goods. We had also thought about sending our stuff earlier so that we wouldn't be without things for too long but it is difficult trying to juggle everything. Still waiting on the price .......

Thanks for your replies so far guys. I know about having an address to give to them, but I was hoping one of you kind AB's would be able to help us with that. After all, it's not going to be delivered there, is it? ;)
Julie,
The guy did say that he was going to a lady in North Birmingham who is also going to Adelaide. I was wondering if it was someone on here! :D He also said about the lady he visited who organised an Adbrits meet and so many people turned up...I'm sure that must be the one we went to!
I was very impressed with the guy. Very efficient, friendly, professional and could really answer all the questions. He was also a Geordie, which won major brownie points with me, I'm biased! He spent a lot of time with me and was very helpful (not like yours Julia, must be someone else). So far I have been most impressed with John Mason, they went to quite a bit of trouble to fit an appointment in for us before we go on holiday and have been in constant contact by phone and e-mail. I've already got our quote. They quoted us £3786 for a 20ft sole use container. This includes presentation to customs, but not the inspection fees, which is paid directly to the clearance people. Also they offerd storage at £30 per week. Don't know how that compares.
We've also had a quote of £3539 from PSS for the same (7 days free storage, woopee) , and one of £4228 from Excess International with one month's free storage in the UK.

Hello Annette.
Yes it was the meet we went to that he was talking about.
He was quite a friendly bloke and very helpful, if we get a quote like that we will probably go with them. We will also be taking a 20ft container.
So far we have had: Atlantis= £3480 not bad, you have to pack some items yourself, of which I'm not bothered.
Allied Pickfords= £4080, they pack everything. The only thing that put me off about these is that they said they take everything off the container when it gets there and then load the stuff onto a lorry to deliver to house, they said that they can't leave the stuff on the container to deliver (not permitted) They also said that every container is searched and to expect a bill for $500.
The others that I have spoken to said everything is delivered in the container and that there is only random checking.
I prefer everything to stay on container that way it doesn't get handled more that it should and things won't get lost.
Brittania= awaiting quote.
We are now waiting for Fox and Robinsons next week.
Have a great time on holiday.

Annette,
I'm sure this isn't right :what?:
The Mann Clan's stuff arrived months & months before they did! :68:
If you ask Gils nicely, she might tell you the sad tale?

p.s they might be offline, moving house at the minute?

Annette.
We used John Mason's couldnt fault the service and was told we could have it stored in oz if we wanted.
your more than welcome to use our address if you need to ;)

This is quite simple, You just ask who your UK removalist who he is using in Adelaide, with the large uk companies it will Either be GRACE,ALLIED PICKFORDS,WRIDGWAYS,KENTS or I.T.S PTY LTD. Each of these companies has an import controller who processes your paper work, and acts as your agent with AUST CUSTOMS & AQIS .So your Adelaide Address will be that Removal company,s ADDRESS ;) Why do you think you pay all this money ?? We have to do somthing to earn it............. <_< mm

Sunny J What Allied have told you is correct, The others are not being honest with you ALL H.H.G [household goods} imported into Australia are removed from the containers to a BOND store for inspection by AQIS [quarantine} and Customs if required........then on release, they are delivered by truck to your house.......... <_< mm

When I ordered my boxes from seven seas (just taking a few) I queried what happens without address told no problem just let us know when you get there. As this query was some time ago I asked again when I rang for them to pick the boxes up and was told I could keep boxes in storage with them here free for a month, then £2/box pw (I think pw) but must have some sort of address and an email address would do. So email address put on all documentation and boxes and off they went. Few hours later email and phonecall from seven seas can't send boxes without address and email will not do!!!!! So mad as could have sorted something out. Have pm'd Elaine to see if she can help but any offers of address gratefully recieved. Thanks Lesley.

Update
Ive had an email from John Mason Saying that it can be arranged with some difficulty to have stuff there without us. Sounds a bit weird to me. Also, they have quoted $350 per month storage plus $500 handling fee. Help please, Im losing the will to live...
also this weird German keyboard isnt helping.....
sorry for strange spelling..
