Title: Wildlife - Adelaide Flora
pickledpossum - May 4, 2004 03:39 PM (GMT)
I may well send half the members to sleep with this thread, but i wanted to tell those who MIGHT be interested, about the weird and wonderful plants and flowers out here.
I keep promising myself i will buy a book on Aussie horticulture but keep forgetting.
Not a day goes by that i dont see something new and interesting.
I still think the Jacaranda trees in springtime are one of the most awsesome sights.
Here in Adelaide they have whole streets lined with them and their flowers are a vivid bright purple.
Have also noted humungous cacti in various places
ok..ok..are you still awake???????

Hi PP,
Like you I love the jacaranda trees when they're in blossom. I've seen them twice out of three visits to Adelaide, when I visited my sister in November 2001 and 2002.
I also love wandering around the Botanic Gardens looking at some of the plants and trees, although I don't know much about flora really I do appreciate the unusual and exotic plants that you see around. My sister loves her garden and is always looking for new plants to try so I'm hoping she'll help me to find some interesting varieties when I eventually find myself a house.

We have a garden full of fruit trees and it seems amazing to be growing masses of peaches, apricots and figs alongside the more usual apples and pears. What's more, as each tree in turn blossoms all the local lorikeets fly in as they are nectar eaters with feathery tongues to soak it up from the flowers. They have recently had bottlebrush blossom, now many of the gum trees are pink or white with fluffy pompom flowers and the birds are enjoying those.
Also, once the fruit begins to ripen the birds return and have a real party pecking a few beakfuls out of every fruit on the tree! Must get some nets before the next crop comes along!
The other thing that seems so odd, is that now it's autumn all the garden centres are full of little seedling plants to go in your borders. I've bought some and popped them in though it seems so strange to be planting out the borders in the autumn- guess they know what they're doing though, either that or I'm just extremely gullible

Hi Elaine
Like you i am finding it very odd seeing new shoots and fresh plants growing in Autumn! I cannot wait to get into the new house and ressurract all my plant pots. I managed to kill everything stone dead in summer as i did not water them enough. I am going to miss the fruit trees in this garden we have in glenelg, although the new house has lots of lovely flowers in its front garden. I might buy some dwarf potted fuit trees for hte front yard, that way we can take them with us when we buy our own place.
My one big problem is going to be finding suitable plants for the back yard as it is right on the edge of the cliff top. Not sure what plants will survive being there during winter. I did notice the next door neighbour had loads of lavender and a couple of other pretty shrubs, but i like the unusual things too. I have decided to go buy a book today and see what will flourish in that environment.

The Botanic Gardens are lovely, just went there this weekend with the family.
Also the Jacaranda Trees were in blossom when we came and it was stunning.

Sundays going to be a nice day so I think we'll go maybe in the afternoon to the Botanical Gardens and have a picnic, well that's if my hubby hasn't got a treat in store for me for mothers day.
