Description: Where are they?
smiley - August 10, 2005 11:34 AM (GMT)
Can anyone recommend a good resteraunt in adelaide. I know there are plenty of websites etc promoting these but would prefer personal recommendations. Preferably Indian, Chinese or good Aussie tucker......

not sure of good restaurants yet, i still struggle to find food i like in the supermarkets, been here 8 weeks, will i ever adjust to their taste buds?.
I wouldn't class myself as a fussy eater either.
God i miss Tesco/Sainsburys.
Pip+And - August 10, 2005 11:46 AM (GMT)
So what is the supermarket equivalent over there?

Can you give us an idea of budget? Are we talking cheap, expensive or middling.
When we were on our recce trip we had a nice Indian in one of the outlying townships near Hahndorf.
Normal restaurant we had a meal at Windy Point (?) which was very nice.
We also had a meal in a mexican restaurant in a marina somewhere but I honestly can't remember where it was.
We also had a god pizza in a restaraunt near Lakeside I think. Sam will know better.

Dont know where my last post went!? - When I was there had a lovely Thai meal in a restaurant on Jetty Road, Glenelg - also if you just fancy cake and coffee try Zuma Cafe, Central Market, City - they sell the most delish cakes - I recommend the Vanilla Slice.

We had a fantastic Indian the other week at the Tandoori Oven in Unley. Catch them before the end of August and they have a special menu for $30 - starter, choice of several main courses, and a glass of wine all in. Fantastic place, wonderful food, excellent serving staff - quite 'posh' but don't dress up, smart casual is the order of the day, and kids at the tables were quite accepted we noticed.
Also we've enjoyed a Thai in Blackwood, and seafood at the restaurant whose name escapes me, the ship that's a reproduction of early migrant ships, at Glenelg. There's a voucher for this in the Entertainment book.
For family meals out, there's the Fresh Choice/Charlie's Diner type all-you-can-eat places which are wonderful value.
So much to choose from

There is no equivalent to Tesco or Sainsburys Im afraid.......
Uk supermarkets are the best in the world in my opinion, but you have to improvise!

Old Mill in Hahndorf does a good buffett and very reasonable as well
rfox - August 10, 2005 04:01 PM (GMT)
Lim's Chinese in Glenelg, Marino Rocks at Marino, Both Mexican in Glenelg are pretty good.
I quite liked the Revolving Restaurant at Glenelg too (is it called Rock Lobster?) but my cousin (who lives there) thought it expensive and the view is not as good now they are building all along the front. Best to go before sunset.

Red Ochre on the river in the city. Great place to try food made with native ingredients. Slightly pricer than normal, but well worth it. Best food we've ever had and the desserts are out of this world, but the service was haphazard as we didn't quite get everything we ordered and sometimes it was late. Underneath is a bistro with decent food too.

I find myself shopping more and more at the Central Market in town before work, as you can get more variety and quality of produce. Have to admit we have been cooking from scratch the old fashioned way since getting here, as it is much cheaper than pre-prepared, and fresh produce is seems much tastier here. Guess it might also have something to do with not commuting 4 hours a day anymore!

I second the house of Chow on Hutt Street..FAB
janandrob - August 11, 2005 01:42 AM (GMT)
I think it would be easier to list places to avoid (although best not for libel reasons ;) ) I think I've had one dissappointing meal in the whole year since we've been here :bouncy:....... and there's been quite a few!
Elaine, the name of the boat resturant is 'The Buffalo'
Supermarkets are fine, it just takes a while to familiarise yourself with what's on offer.....on the whole I feel you can make far healthier food choices here, especially with the vast range of fruit and veg on offer. But on the flip-side there's alot of junk/processed/additives/colourings in type of food, especially for the kids :(

Zucca on the Glenelg marina does great greek
Pride of India in Glenelg does good curry
Grange Jetty kiosk was good with lovely views
Evida at Henley Beach has some nice stuff and again, great views
Sprouts (city) is a great vegetarian restaurant
and I've heard that Auge, in the city, has just won best restaurant in SA, it also comes out top in the entertainment book poll for last years best restaurant
We've found the best food at the wineries, we've tried quite a few and they've all been absolutely fantastic...salt n vines, neagles rock and coffee and cork at Clare
Jacob's Creek and Banrock Station both have great reataurants too.
Happy eating

We went to an Italian resturant for lunch at Brighton, I think it was called Cafe Primo. Selection of lunches and weekday evenings $9.90, really nice and huge portions.

For a "lucky dip" type stroll when you're undecided, most locals seem to point in the direction of Gouger Street (South side of the market) and Melbourne Street (North Adelaide) as the "Eat Streets" to try. Especially in the summer evenings.
Bon appetite.

The central Market , some thing that disappeared, in the UK before you were born. You can buy FRESH produce {not wrapped in plastic} Tomatoes that look small and crappy , but taste like heaven. Table grapes that have not changed since roman times, {not hormone ridden golf balls } ;) , Pumpkin 5 varietes, cabbage 5 varietes ,potatoes 100 varieties and so on .........you will figure ,that i don,t go in Supermarkets to often.............. <_< mm

Grange Hotel has always got my vote as a good place to eat (Kiosk is okay too). If anyone likes chicken schnitzels though, the Earl of Leicester in Parkside does the biggest ones in the world....pretty difficult to get through all of it!
I've heard Windy Point in Belair is pretty special, overlooking the whole city and glass ceilings so you can see the stars. Will have to get along there soon but just a pain to get to from the beach
Garf ;)

Hi
Some other places to add to the list are
Christie's Beach Hotel - good/excellent pub grub, good wine and good prices too. Plus Callum loves to play on the beach as we walk there
Don Arturos in Brighton Road (opposite Charlie's Diner) - great food, different every time but REALLY QUIET...handy with a toddler but not great for atmosphere - also BYO which is handy
Buffalo and Hogsbreath in Glenelg, the first of which is very child friendly so we love it. Also a Hogsbreath in Gouger St - haven't been yet but going there next week
The Esplanade Hotel in Brighton - went there a lot at first but then they took the seafood pizza of the menu so went to
Cafe Primo instead, good value, good food
Best of all is
a Chinese in Chinatown that we cannot remember the name of (not very helpful...will edit this post when we next go up to the city and find the name) Fantastic food, very friendly AND they love having Callum there - VERY child friendly - the downside is that the place looks more like a cafe ...it's the first street you turn into in Chinatown after Central Market. On the left hand side, ducks, etc hanging in the window, as you go in there's a ramp on the left hand side behing a door that's not used. Look like a cafe but the food is AMAZING - recomend the garlic prawns .Starter , two mains, rice, a litre of wine,a beer, a coke, prawn crackers and change from $50!(I think it's opposite a hairdressers - really must find out what it is called!) Job for tomorrow is go there and eat and find out the name!!! Best Chinese food we've found so far
Natee Thai (think thats how its spelt) in Jetty Road, Glenelg. Beautiful food, very nice people. BYO
Or as someone else has said, Gouger Street looks amazing lots of restaurants to choose from. With a toddler we tend to stay away from there at the moment but waiting till Callum grows up!
So many places to chose from but these are the ones that spring to mind first.
Bon Appetit!

Hi,
Having 2 kids 4 & 2 eating out with them can be a bit stressfull :sigh: so normally we get a baby sitter and go out alone :D
A few people mentioned kid friendly resturants, just wondered if they have any things/play equipt/garden to keep them occupied. I remember in the advertiser a few months ago they reviewed a few kid friendly resturants, we I kept it now :sigh:
We really need a good pub with a safe enclosed gardenfor the kids, where we can a meal and a few beers, this is one of the only things I really miss from the Uk :(
Cheers

Working shift work isn't the best for socialising, but whenever I make it with my old mates from years ago and hit the turps for the night, we kick off at "Hawker's Corner" along West Tce. in the city on the edge of the parklands.
Prices are very cheap, and you can end up with a choice of Chinese, Thai, Malaysian or Indian tucker.
It's not a flash place, perfect for a mob of blokes out on the razzle, but I have seen families eat there too .. . so it's whatever you make of the place.
It's worth checking out at least, as me and Gin have often fed our faces there and gone off to the pictures for the evening in town.
For all those who are game, might I suggest the pie cart on the corner of the G.P.O. selling "pie floaters", a meal almost extinct nowadays with KFC and McDonald's in every suburb. There used to be three pie carts in Adelaide . . . one at the G.P.O., another outside the old railway station on North Tce, and a third up the Norwood Parade. They'd be there till 4 in the morning on weekends. Now there is only the one cart left.
It was very popular to get a "floater" thirty years ago, just like fish & ships when most of you were kids . . . . . . still worth a try! . . . .or is it just for old farts like me?

Hong Phat BBQ restaurant on Grote Street - just after the car park Central market.
Another chinese that looks like a cafe. Nothing flash about this place but the food is great, good sized portions and cheap too. Best of all, the two little terrors have been welcomed every time. Gets very busy as it's not very big & it's very popular with the Chinese (which is what tempted us in the first place!)

Hi
Trying to work out if that is the one we mean also or not....
Just wanted to clarify that when I said 'family friendly' I meant that at the stage we are at , i.e. they have high chairs, don't seem to freak out at the sight of a toddler and dump us at the back of the restaurant out of sight!, child menus or child-friendly food, just generally accepting of toddlers.
Best child friendly restaurant I can think of was in Hahndorf (Hahndorf Inn we THINK!) - had a huge collection of toys - a great lunch until we got the bill and added up how much extra we had spent due to Callum being happy and contented on Rods steins (that of course weren't really a stein!)

My husband LOVES pie floaters!
We went to the one in Victoria Square when we visited last year - but there was also another outside the train station (near the Casino complex thingy).. Perhaps that one has gone now.
I like the peas but not the pie - that's a floater I guess (attractive sounding ain't it!).
