Can I ask with a swimming pool does this make your rates go up by loads? I've just been checking out some properties with pools and even though the dream of having one is very nice the practicality of it all is something I would like to be made aware of.....especially as I myself have never owned one!
Does anyone know how much it costs to run a pool? I know someone mentioned before that the electric bill goes up due to the pump etc. but what about things like your water rates do you get penalised for owning one? and how much does it cost to maintain one?
Sorry for the questions but I'm trying to work out whether or not just to invest in Rach's Paddling pool instead and cross off all the properties with pools as an option for us.

We want a swimming pool as well. It's one of my wifes conditions to go to Aus (as well as taking the dog). But I have heard that they are not so fashionable as they used to be because of the potential cost. The other option is to make sure the neighbours have one before buying the house

Our pool ,30ft x12ft [65000ltrs] is salt water chlorinated, thus we dont have to buy many chemicals, this cuts a lot of your costs, rates will naturally go up as it increase,s the value of your property,so why are you worried? you are value adding. Your electric bill will be higher in the summer months ,as the pump has to run longer to filter the water, due to higher usage{we average $600 for this quarter}Nov - feb.The thing you have to come to terms with,is the sunday morning clean, vacuum ,back wash etc, Pool cleaners are good[Kreepy crawly} but like kids ,you still have to clean the tight spots.................. MM
Not so much worried I'm trying to cost things up a bit so I know what to expect. If it looks like the pool thing will cost too much then I might have to check out houses where the neighbours have pools (like your style of thinking Austen! ;) )
So it's more a question of what cost is actually involved in running a pool, if that makes sense.
How was your trip to Tas anyway MM, did you have a lovely time?
