Title: Adelaide or Brisbane?

Calvin - August 10, 2005 10:52 PM (GMT)
To any of you still debating the 'should i move to Adelaide or Brisbane' dilemma, I thought this may help.

Adelaide weather today = 12 degress with a chance of rain (again).
Brisbane weather today = 24 degrees and sunny (again).

Obviously it depends on your reasons for moving to Oz, but if you are coming for the weather, the above explains it all.

Hope this helps.

In an ideal world I'd be in Brisbane for Winter and here in Spring, Summer and Autumn. The humidity in Brisbane is an absolute killer...just about bearable on a holiday (with aircon in living areas/car and a pool) but everyday life? no thanks :(

In fact even Winter here hasn't been that bad :D No No Adelaide wins hands down for me :bouncy:

We specifically opted for Adelaide in the end because we'd heard that the humidity was a killer and hubby in particular would have really struggled with that, particularly as an electrician working in lofts in humidity/very high heat would have finished him off!

:D 2-0 to Adelaide so far ......

Well we visited Tassie at Christmas and it was 30 or so degrees and very humid when we arrived there. It reminded me what a struggle the humidity makes it - so you won't catch me in Brissie either I'm afraid. Mind you I might well give my vote for Tassie rather than Adelaide, absolutely loved it there and they don't get too many 'hot' days (they have snow in Hobart at the mo, for the first time in 15 year!).

We recently visited Adelaide and Brisbane on a reccie. Much to our surprise :) we preferred Adelaide. I wrote a thread on my thoughts based on first impressions and opionions of the two. You can find it at

I have been to Brisbane where it was very hot but it also rained for 6 days !

I have never been to Adelaide so I cant really compare, I'll have to wait & see :D

In the summer, when it's hot, you get next to no rain at all for months on end here.

In those long dry spells, I bet you're glad when it rains. It's a bit hard for a pom to get his head round that idea, but I will be finding out for myself soon enough. Here we are in the height of "summer" and we're expecting rain to interrupt play at the 3rd test at Old Trafford today.

We moved to Oz purely for the weather and better quality of life !!!

I too have been to Brisbane, and loved it. It is clean, bright, and most of all....not scruffy like Adel. The summer heat/humidity doesn't bother me, but the rain does. I know Adelaide won't get as much rain in the summer, but the winter chill has put me right off ! Didn't move 12.5k miles for 5 months of cold!!!

Am going to check out Perth, if that's no good, then Brissy it is.

Also, I am shocked at the amount of crime here in Golden Grove. Considering it was voted the 'Worlds Best Address' a couple of years ago, I'd like to know what it was judged on. Every week I read in the local Messenger about 'breakins', car theft, people getting 'jumped on', rape, and drug raids!!!

My missus does not feel as safe here, and i don't blame her. I'm not saying other cities are any different, Sydney is worse, but we do ask ourselves, what's different in Adelaide from where we were from in the UK.

Oh well, you live and learn

Ah, another constructive contribution.

Whether I agree with Mikey B's opinions or not, and while choosing not to inflame the tribes of the North, I don't feel the need to make a "conversation killer" comment.

We have friends who tried Adelaide, couldn't settle, drove (including kids & bunny) to Queensland, didn't like it but remembered a place in NSW en route that appealed to them (Port MacQuarie) and drove back there. They've been very happy there for a couple of years but are now considering Perth because of the cost of living in the East.

I just want them to find what works for them - as I do for anyone on here - but I don't feel threatened by other people's opinions being different to my own (despite some of my (perhaps) poor attempts at humour).

God bless us one and all...

I think perhaps the biggest thing that this thread should bring home to people is how very different it can be in different parts of Australia. You'd expect that France would be different from Spain, and different again from England - but all those countries would fit many times over in Australia and you have VERY different weather, communities skewed towards different nationalities, not to mention the choice between city or country life. We've been trying to get about a bit and see different places, but I think I'd have to follow Snappy's example and travel nonstop for a couple of years to really feel I'd got an overview of the place.

Just grab all the info you can and try to think where your own feelings might lie - and don't count Oz out as a complete disaster if the first place you try is not right fot you.

I hope that postcard isn't right, as we're off to Zante in a fortnight or so and that would be Melbourne on the map. I was reading yesterday that people were getting snowed in around there :68: (the area refered to as "southern australia" by the BBC....)

I've not been to Adelaide yet, but I thought Brisbane was very over rated. Perth is lovely, good weather all year and lovely city, but as the aussies say "its a bl :sign53: dy long way"!!

Im really looking forward to exploring South Australia, esp Coober Pedy and ofcourse the wineries! :loopy:

Theres absolutely no shame in deciding somewhere isn't for you, we are all looking for different things after all....

Where to go is something we cant decide on either, so in March we are going to Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane. Although I am leaning towards Brisbane. Hope the humidity is not as bad as you are saying though.

Hi Cybie,

In a perfect world we'd have the time and funds to do the round trip too (relies in Perth, at first we thought of settling in Brisbane, etc etc) but as we dont have an abundance of either, we decided on Adelaide as it 'felt right' :D . We'd love to hear your views on them all when you're done though :)

Have a great trip.

Hi All We haven,t answered alot on here, but i was reading this and felt i had to give my point.I lived and worked in Brisbane 10 years ago , as a hairdresser, only for about 6 months. It was very hot and humid in the summer and as someone mentioned it rains no end at times, and is still hot. While i was there i was burglered , slapped in the face while walking into town and someone tried to pick me up while i was walking to the gym, curb curling. We have chosen Adelaide, not that i have been, because one thing i missed was the seasons, and having two small children we felt would be better weather wise i.e. not too hot.I am only going on my gut feelings, but what i have read and seen it looks like it has some depth to the city, churches, europeon style. but the cosmopliton style to the city, but yet a step back in time for us pommies and hopefully that extra family time together everyone is looking for.My hubby is a police officer and he says what ever county or country there is always crime, however big or small. I am not sure where my point is but one thing i know is ,we are as a family going to give it a whirl and we can,t wait!! Tracy
