Title: Taking pets??
montia - May 9, 2004 01:33 PM (GMT)
We were wondering if anyone has come across a problem when taking their cat or dog with them.
On the forms you have to put down an address in Australia for the quarantine kennels and the way I see it is if we go for the meet and greet housing you don't get told that until the last minute.
As we haven't got any family out there not sure what we'd do?? :what?:
Has anybody else had this problem and if so how did they overcome it? :sign09:
Thanks in advance

Don't know about cats and dogs, but we had to give a contact address here before the removals people would confirm our move! Fortunately Suzanne O'Malley, our lovely travel agent that I've mentioned before, gave us her home address to use - what a darling she is.
I guess you could bribe one of us to act as a contact point for you.

Some friends of mine used me as a contact address for several things. I had only ever spoken to them on the internet, but viewed their house and acted as 'agent/representative/intermediary'' for the purchase. I had their new car delivered to my house before they arrived here, and used my address for certain correspondence etc. I am sure they used my address for quarantine but I never had any contact from the quarantine place about their animals.
A word of warning - they brought over a much loved boxer dog and two cats. The dog lost over a stone in weight and was in a poor condition when released from quarantine. She had pressure sores on her elbows from sleeping on concrete. One of the cats had a large bald patch on her back where she had lost hair due to stress, and to this day it has not grown back properly, and both cats lost considerable weight and condition.
Having said that all the animals came through the journey and the quarantine and are now thriving here. The dog has a new lease on life and loves running around their 12 acre property instead of the back yard of a 3 bed semi in East London.
On another point I had certain registered items delivered to me here on their behalf, (mostly from the Nurses Registration board), but in order to get the post office to release them to me, my friends had to fax my local PO with a letter confirming that I had permission to collect their post.

We took our dog with us, and he was fine.
He lost a bit of weight, and he was a bit hoarse from all the woofing, but other than that fine.
I did visit him though just to let him know i was near, its not too bad in spotswood, its an easy 1/2 hour drive from the airport.
You will need to arrange transport from spotswood to adelaide though to bring your pooch back, in the end i had him flown over as it was much easier than driving all the way there and back, cost about $250. to get him flown back. the kennels can give you details.
You could use the adress of your temp accomodation if you like, its only for the invoice, you can get a PO box when you get there and tell spotswood your new address.
Dont forget to arrange heartworm tablets as well.

Thanks guys. :thumbs up:
Although I am obviously worried about the journey for them, they are used to kennels and hopefully will be ok. :sign03: Saying that there were a number of show dogs found dead in their travel boxes when they were on route to the world dog show in Rio the other week due to the heat and the fact they were stacked with poor ventilation between boxes. :(
Pressure sores and things like that are a real worry because one of them is in the peak of his show career and could really do with out those!! I think I will be having a long talk to the kennels before they get there (they're going to love me!!! )
Thanks PP for the offer to use your address we might just take you up on that when we get to that bridge. :cool shake:
