Title: Keeping your UK driving license?
Description: Anyone found a way?

SpiderHibs - August 29, 2005 08:54 AM (GMT)
I have to apply for my SA driving license this week and surrender my UK license. Has anyone found a way to keep both?

Thanks,
Paul

CatWithClaws - August 29, 2005 09:07 AM (GMT)
Hi Paul
They initially told me I had to surrender my UK one but when I went back I got someone different on the counter who let me keep it - AND they didn't put a hole in it like the first person said they would!
It seems to vary from centre to centre also - try saying you will be making frequent trips back to the UK and will need your UK licence intact. It probably helps if you put on your most worried face and beg too (that's what I did anyway and it worked for me!)
Good luck!

They don't need to take it and you only have to ask for them to leave it with you - but they will usually punch a hole in your UK license. I've no idea whether this makes it unusable in the uk, but here they will know that you have an Oz one.

When I did mine, they never even asked for the UK one so I still have it, un-defaced.

Hi Paul,
After taking my Theory Test here, i thought they would ask for my uk driving licence to be handed in.
I asked if i could keep it, they said "ok", i was really pleased :)

I'm sure that I read somewhere that you can tell them that you need it as you go back to the Uk quite often ( hope that makes sense ! :happy25: )

I would have to question if they actually had the right to deface a valid licence, rendering it useless in the u.k.

I asked about this while I was doing rego, and was advised that they now give a u.k licence back intact as they'd had too many complaints. This was at Marion.

Hi Paul,

Both Derek and myself sat our theory tests at Marion on different days and neither one of us were asked to hand over our UK licences.

We both did ours at the Marion.

Both still have got UK licence, and no hole.

Asked if they needed to have it, funny lady said only we looked like the photo so they had no use for it.

Both Andy and I did our theory test at Enfield. They asked us if we wanted to keep our UK licence we said yes so they left them in tact.

Hi,

We are worried about this too, so I checked on the DVLA website.

You can get a duplicate licence for 19 pounds if it is lost (so I may be a naughty girl, say I have lost mine, get a duplicate, then the Auzzies can have one with pleasure!!)

Hope I dont go to prison!!!
:sign68:

Anyone else done this?

Got mine and no hole!!

Lee and Alison - August 30, 2005 12:47 AM (GMT)

Took my theory test at Marion, and my license was handed back, but because my uk license did not state I wore glasses, I had to get an opticians certificate to say i was capable of driving with them on before they would issue my OZ license.

Me and my other half have both got our Aussie Licences. I was told that they no longer have to keep your licence or put an hole in it i did mine at Port Adelaide and my other half did his at Modbury.

When you exchange your drivers licence for an Aussie one then do they record you UK licence details or is it a case of a quick glance to proove you have one?

Tidds - August 30, 2005 09:38 AM (GMT)
Got ours and no holes :D

SpiderHibs - August 30, 2005 10:42 AM (GMT)
Thanks for all the replies guys. I queried it with the helpline and they say officially you have to give it up as you can't hold two licenses for ID purposes. They only exceptions are those in the diplomatic services or armed forces.

Looks like it's hit or miss depending on the person serving you. Looks like I'll just have to take my chances.

A wee update.....

Sat my test today at Elizabeth today and they only looked at my driving license. They'd didn't mark it or keep a hold of it. It seems to very much depend on which person you get behind the counter.

Got mine at Modbury with my brother this week and we were asked if we wanted to keep it. We both sdaid yes and they were returned, hole and stamp free.

Steve did his at Modbury 5 weeks ago and they stamped his. I think its just pot luck.

Someone told us if you go back to the UK and get stopped show your Aussie license as the Police can't be bothered to book an overseas driver.

Apologies to any english Policemen just arrived, I'm sure whoever told me was wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
