Title: Second hand cars
ozzygumdrops - August 29, 2005 04:40 PM (GMT)
Hi again..... this site is addictive by the way!!!
I know we are not there yet, but any guides on second hand car prices?
We dont want to spend too much as a house is our priority, but a car is also essential.
Are they expensive compared with GB?
How about car insurance prices, do you need an mot, car tax?
Any info gratefully received.
Regards,
Karen

Hiya Karen,
I have a friend (English) who has been a car dealer in Tea Tree Gully for years. Obviously I have never bought from him but will be doing so when I arrive. A genuine honest fella and a fellow pom.
I can forward his details onto you if you would like and anyone else for that matter who is interested in a new or used car.
Regards,
Ian

I know there's a recommendation for a car dealer in the Recommendations section.
Do get an RAA check done on any car you propose to purchase.
Oh, and don't EVER pay the price in the windscreen unless you really want to make the car salesman's day!

I promised myself I'd not post in the open forum ( must be addicted ) but I just can't let this one go as I have just gone through this one with my newly arrived rellies and what a minefield.
DON'T sign a sale contract before you are absolutely sure you have found the right vehicle as they will leagally hold you to the contract.
My relatives were told by one particular used car company that they would not negotiate on the advertised price until they signed a contract, what a joke, and I told the salesman as much and the fact that he was trying to make use of the naivety of newly arrived immigrants.
The bottom line is this never pay the advertised price no matter what they say, haggle, or walk away, they will persue you.
The car my relatives wanted to buy was advertised at $11K and they ended up paying only $8.7K plus had extras thrown in.
Take them on I say! and Mr Movers link is a good start for researching.
Good luck and all the best with your used car purchase.

In my experience, second hand cars are more expensive in Australia than the UK. For a family sized saloon in decent condition, less than ten years old, I'd guess a rough price of at least $8,000 (talking private purchase, not caryard). Perhaps some of the other forumites could post how much they paid for theirs and what they got for their money, I'm sure this would give you a better idea.
cheers, adelaidegirl

And cars here last forever - there's no salt on the roads to make them rust away.

Not all dealers are rip off merchants ! I recently bought a 10 year old mitsubishi triton dual cab ute with 160,000 km on the clock for the equivalent of about £1800 and it had a nearly new canopy on it which the dealer said would be worth nearly as much as the vehicle itself. and so far its not skipped a beat and i have been driving on some pretty rough roads recently (unsealed ) getting to and from work :cool shake:

Hello
Personally I think second hand car prices are ridiculous compared to UK! Coming from the motor trade, I was astonished at the prices for old bangers :o . The cars do seem to last longer though, there are cars driving about here older than me!
Do your research so your not shocked ;)
On the other hand, you can get crackin deals on Brand New Jap cars :P

Definatley haggle, & get it inspected. You can always ask the dealer to write 'subject to inspection' on a contract.
You can also ask a dealer for previous owners details which they have to provide. The only exception to this is if the car has come from N.S.W as they have their own data protection act. It's not unheard of for a previous owner to get a phone call asking why they parted with their car.
S/H dealers also have a duty to repair as follows:
Sale price Duty to repair
up to & inc $3000 No duty to repair but vehicle must be roadworthy
at the time of sale.
$3001-$6000 Two months or 3000kms, whichever occurs first
Over $6000 Three months or 5000kms whichever occurs first
Not all faults are covered - for example paintwork or upholstery that you should have noticed when you inspected the vehicle. Some accessories if they have been listed by the dealer etc, but it's explained fully in Form 2 (Notice to purchaser) when you purchase a vehicle.
The only way you can give away your warranty rights is if you sign a waiver document.
Your average km's here run at about 20,000 per year.
The amount of stamp duty is determined by the sale price of the vehicle.
Not forgetting rego - the amount you pay depends on size of engine & weight of the vehicle. Rego includes 3rd party compulsory insurance but comprehensive insurance is not as hefty as the U.K. Don't forget to bring over any proof of No Claims you held in the U.K. ;)
