Title: Perth or Adelaide?
Description: Confused where to start in Oz!

paulapaul - August 30, 2005 10:25 AM (GMT)
PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP ME!!!

We have just started the Visa application process to move to Oz under a skilled migration Visa 136 (hubby is a carpenter). Like many of you, we had pretty much decided that Brisbane was for us - then we read about the humidity - mmmm - not nice for hubby as a chippy, he is pretty convinced Brissie is not for us afterall! Our next idea was Perth, now we have come accross you guys!

We have 2 small children, and don't have the funds (or sanity) to rekkie Perth and Adelaide. Is there anyone out there who have done both? What is the climate like for working outside? What is the socail scene like (friendly)? Is there plenty of work in construction?

Hope someone out there can help us!

Paula :sign68:

Wow...where do I begin!!

This site is great and I've had a laugh with a lot of people on here, but it's going to be a tad biased, isn't it?! ;)

We went to Adelaide three times to give it a go, but my family just didn't like it. I loved it, it was polite, quaint and very, very clean.

Now, we're in Perth and it beats Adelaide hands down. Sorry.

It's larger, there is more to do, better work prospects, even cleaner (if that could be possible), there are more English here which makes it feel more like the England we were looking for back home. A sort of home away from home, which, in some strange way, means we don't feel so far away from freinds in the UK.

There are a lot more newer suburbs and plots of land up for sale, the houses are also cheaper on the whole as well.

We spent years looking into only Adelaide, and looking back, I wish we had looked into Perth as much.

My wife hated Adelaide and got very ill through it all, but loves Perth like you wouldn't believe.

All I can say is once you've done all the research you think you can do.....do it again.

Steve.

My opinion for what its worth.

Adelaide is great, Perth is Fantastic!

We are now back in UK, through our own personal choice, which feels even better, but if we did it again know where we'd go.........................

Hello :)

This is my opinion..

Perth is "easier on the eye" nicer than Adelaide...beaches are more rugged...but its bloody remote :( If you want to fly to say Melbourne or Sydney for the "big city " fix, shopping trip etc, it takes hours..aswell as costing $$$ more than to fly from elsewhere. The fact thats its brimming with expats is not a bonus for us..as we didnt want England/Scotland in the sun <_< (although i think Adelaide is gonna get that way too haha)

We chose Adelaide.. its a great "allrounder" Everythings within a short distance, City, Hills (luvvly drive) & beaches, which are nice. We dont have kids, but our friends do, and it seems a nice place for kids, less crime etc. Its only a hop skip n a jump flight away from the big Cities & ski ranges, which was the clincher for us!

Oh, what a tough decision eh! not a bad situation

We've been to both - live in Adelaide.

Job offer for hubby came in from Adelaide which is why we are here instead of Perth. Adelaide is a lovely place to live and has great coastline etc...

Perth I agree is a more modern place but it is so far to everywhere else in Australia.

Not an easy choice until you can experience them both yourselves.

Wow Bev I thought we hadn't seen you posting for a while! Glad to hear you're all well.

Sorry - nothing to do with the thread but had to say hello!

Diane

PS Adelaide, definitely!

but its bloody remote

We considered this, but personally, I think that remoteness is a state of mind. So it's an extra couple of hours on the plane if you want to go somewhere else in oz, so what. On the other hand, it's a couple of hours closer to the UK if people are visiting or you are going back to the UK for anything.

Also, just to throw a spanner in the works, because Perth is further away from everything, they are a lot more 'self-sufficient' on a lot of things and produce more here, rather than rely on importing from other states. This makes thing cheaper, we find.

Bearing all this in mind, my wife felt that Adelaide really was on the other side of the world and suffered with homesickness very badly. Perth, she completely feels at home in.

Just my opinion,

Steve.

I reckon you are probably one of our longest serving members, so feeling settled seems to have been a long time coming.

Good to hear you are well and happy

I'll second that Andy, glad to hear it's all come right for you Steve.

BTW, how does the weather there compare with here, seeing as you've experienced both?

Julia - August 31, 2005 08:21 AM (GMT)
Good to hear you're all happily settled in Perth Steve.

We may be knocking on your door visiting one of these days..... :D

Thanks Andy, Elaine and Julia. Everything has fallen into place for us. Eve loves it and is working, the kids are in school, have made friends, joined clubs and are more than happy and I started work today as an electrician and drive home along the coast. What more can I say.

The weather is great, a few rainy nights, but it has been winter, daytimes are beautiful, though. We've bought a plot of land and are having a house designed. The shipping arrives in 3 weeks and we are all looking forward to sleeping in our own beds again.

Sorry Sigh, but the finger is stuck!

Hope everybody gets what they want out of life, just as I have.

Steve.

We've been to Perth twice and would be our first choice, but we're due to visit Adelaide in Oct so reserving judgement. We have relatives in Adelaide so now our first choice due to STNI visa.

I didn't feel remote at all, I'm hoping the two places are very similar as the australian lifestyle I've fallen in love with has been in Perth.

Just a quite thought, there is a website Poms in Perth ?! Don't know if you know it or not, but might be worthwhile logging on there too for the "other" opinion.

Good luck in whichever you decide !

Hi

Your story is an exact copy of our own - thought about Brisbane, wrote that off due to the humidity - thought about Perth as hubby has rellies there but felt it was a little too remote from the rest of Oz, etc etc

We found out we could go to SA on STNI visa which has now become an MODL visa since electricians were added to the list. Adelaide in all of our months and months of research has turned out to have all the positive attributes that we consider best suit us as a family - i.e. seasonal weather and a mediteranean type climate, by all accounts a very family orientated city, cheap housing compared to Brisbane or Perth (albeit salaries are generally lower in SA but we won't have a mortgage to take into account). We also plan to see as much of the country as possible and from SA there are more cities which are affordably accessible.

Wherever you decide to go, all the best for your adventure :D

Hugs
K & Co xx
