Title: Adelaide Central Market.
Description: Do you use it?
Sunshine - September 5, 2005 10:10 AM (GMT)
Hi Guys
Just wondering how many of us actually use / visit the market on a regular basis?
When we first arrived we were told by several people about the market, what good value for money it is and the fabulous choice of produce. I still remember the first time we went being utterly bewildered by the huge choice and sheer size of the market! We spent ages wondering around aimlessly until we worked out a good system to get around and which stalls we liked to buy from each week.
We now use the market every Saturday to get all of our fruit, veg, meat, fish, cheese, and bread, (and sometimes sweeties they sell Maoam (sp?) and just use the supermarkets for all the other stuff, household, tins etc.
We always go in early because it can be difficult to park much after 9.30, but there are plenty of places to meet friends and have leisurely lunches if thats what you prefer (with two kids in tow we like to be in and out within the hour!).
If you haven't been yet, do go and have a look its well worth it.
Sunshine.

Easiest way is down Grote Street and I must agree it is sensors overload! :happy45:
Love it and use it every week.

We went in July for a look, I was impressed
Was also pleased to see they have my favourite south african chutney.
our daughter loved the stalls with all the testers - yogurts, ice creams etc

Grote street, opposite Her Majesty's Theatre.
I know that because I had to wait outside the theatre in freezing cold one evening 2 weeks ago waiting for it to open  and I noticed it across the road.

Funny this should come up as we went there for the first time today (although we had picked the wrong day and only about half of it was open  ). I had wondered if people use it regularly. Paul thinks it might be a hassle to do it every week, but I was impressed by what I saw and yes, if you can go on a Saturday morning before the rush, I guess that's a great idea. I'm certainly going to consider it.

CENTRAL MARKET IS FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We go there every week for cheese, veg, bread, croissants, etc and Rod has learnt more about coffee since we started going there than he ever thought he would ever know! If you love coffee then there is a fantastic stall with a really informative friendly woman working there - its diagonally across from Con's fine foods (deli - stall 18) and the coffee is great - can blend any of the beans and they grind it however you wish for no extra charge (hate coffee myself but love the grandaddys cheese at Con's and they sell my favourite ever thing I have discovered since arriving in Adelaide a year ago (not counting wine as had discovered that already!) Maggie Beers pate - WOW - if you like good quality strong pate - you will love it - pricey but well worth it)
Central Market is great
Enjoy!

Hi
the market shops are open Mon - Sat, but the Central stalls are only open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. (Friday is late night - 9pm and Saturday they close early at 3pm).
I shop there every week, mainly at the organic fruit and veg stall, there is also a great organic shop immediately opposite in Gouger St called Wilsons.

Hi Jules
Is the organic fruit/ veg more expensive than here
My youngest has mostly organic and some things are ridiculous to buy here.

We went for the first time yesterday and was very impressed with it, only problem was we parked about 30 mins walk away and my arms were falling off, I'll try mill st for parking next time.

Hi
We tried that in the food court in Chinatown next to Central Market - went at about 2:30 - $5 a plate - didn't need dinner that night as were packed!!! also recommend a great Chinese - opposite the foodcourt - called Kens Chinese Restaurant - looks like a cafe but the food is fantastic - garlic prawns...mmmm. Love going to Central Market and having a Chinese meal before we shop...

Apparently the best time to go is Saturday afternoon when they sell everything off cheap from the fresh produce stalls.
