can't recommend any directly but we saw loads whilst we were out there in June. If you search under agistment (I think) yuo may find some.

I was told you have to be 8+ to have lessons by one stable up at Chandlers Hill. Not sure if this is the case all over. Long waiting list too..........

Hi Ali
Although there are loads of horses in Adelaide, riding stables are few and far between. My daughter is also horse crazy, but the only stables i could find in the whole of Adelaide were in the Northern hills, a good 45min drive away. We've given up on horse riding for the time being because they're so hard to come by. :(

Thanks everyone - looks like it will have to be the rocking horse when we arrive!

have a look here
http://www.horsesa.asn.au/might be something in there.
I can't imagine that there would be anywhere that could afford the public liability insurance for a 2 year old!

Thanks for that I have e mailled them so we will have to wait and see.
Back here in the UK i was lucky enough to find a stables which does Tots Trotts specially aimed at pre school kids, and is brilliant. Ellie loves it so it would be a shame to give it up now...............

Hi Ali,
I've the same problem with my daughter although she's a tad older at 12 years.
I contacted the British Horse Society pleading for any info they have in SA. They responded fairly quickly saying that they don't have approved facilities in SA but to try the Australian Equestrian Federation website is
http://www.efanational.com I've just dashed an e-mail off and am awaiting a reply as we promised Holly riding in SA !!!.
Hope this will be of use to you also.

unfortunately not really, she hasn't had particularly "formal" instruction.... it's mostly done through friends and neighbours.
There are certainly courses and workshops you can attend, but these are generally for people who own horses, not so much "basic" riding instruction.
There are a couple of "tourist" type rides available (2 hour hack along the beach followed by "dinky di" BBQ type stuff) ....Normanville is one place that springs to mind.
There's also this place
http://www.wirraway.org/home.htmlalthough it's a bit "god squad-ish", they do run camps where horses/riding play a large part. I think it's mostly for older kids though (10 upwards)
I suspect that there probably isn't a huge market for formal riding schools/instruction as lots of people own their own horses and learn "on the job" and from rellies etc
I can't imagine there would be too much more info that isn't on the horse SA site.....

I remember a few years back when the public liabilty rates shot through the roof that most riding schools shut up shop.
You'll just have to buy your own bomb proof pony, and a hobby farm!

If ever anyone needs their horse exercising after they all rush off to buy them please remember me :P I don't think we'll be able to afford to buy a horse although it's my dearest wish (have ridden since childhood) and was relying on a stables somewhere to resume riding but it doesn't sound like that's going to be possible from this :( . Ah well. I'll watch this thread and see if anyone comes up with any names of stables :sign03: .

You could try volunteering for riding for the disabled, although I'm not sure how much (if any) riding you would get to do.
Wizzy would know more as she ?is/was? a volunteer there

Cheers Andy I'll definitely do that. At least I'd get near horses again (sad person that I am). It's the only thing I've ever really been addicted to (oh and red wine of course! :P ). The foal looks gorgeous congratulations to Mrs Andy and the proud mum. :D

foal will be going off to become a Melbourne Cup winner, but mum is coming back to us.....
there is quite a strong racing history in Adelaide, with a couple of courses around the place....
there might be opportunities in that field......

Results now in from the Oz Equestrian Federation. Got a nice e-mail from Angela Yeend from the SA branch.

Hi John
There are a few you could try but it would depend a little on the area you are moving to. North East of Adelaide you could try Kersbrook Equestrian Centre, Nicki Stuart, Ph (08) 8389 3028. In the Adelaide Hills at Woodside, Denise Rofe on (08) 8389 7748 may be able to help you. South of Adelaide you could try Lyn Jutilane-Maynard on 0422 805 106.
I hope this helps and good luck with the move to Australia.

Hope these details help anyone looking for riding lessons in the Adelaide area.

We've just given Vicky riding lessons for her birthday. The stables at Chandlers Hill were very promising on the phone (after some others were not <_< ) and she's now had 2 lessons. We're impressed, Lynne there is a dressage competitor herself and always seems to have several young girls helping her at the stables, she's firm and positive but also very encouraging for Vicky (who can be a little lacking in confidence at times...).
We had no trouble being fitted in for lessons.
Re insurance, we have to stump up $75 per year to be included on the stables' insurance policy, as well as the $45 per lesson fee. To start with, Vicky has been given half hour individual lessons on a lunge rein for this price, once Lynn is happy with her progress she will join a one hour group lesson where they ride out.
All in all it's a firm recommendation from us, they seem a very good place to go to.
Here's the details from yellow pages:
Cartmel Rise Equestrian Centre

Thanks for the recommendation Elaine, I'll definitely be giving them a ring when we arrive - don't know about anyone else! Looks like I might not have to suffer withdrawal symptoms after all ;)
