Title: Bicycles

FredG - May 11, 2004 11:27 PM (GMT)
Greetings.

Is it worth shipping bikes over from the UK or are they cheaply available there?
The UK site I bought my eldest son's bike from is http://www.sterlinghouse.co.uk/

Are similar deals to be had "down under"?

hi we brought our bikes we have 3 and my daughters seat that fits on the back, we jet washed them and cleaned them, but i think if you are already bringing stuff out with you i would say bring them with you, infact unless your stuff is really old and you were going to get new stuff anyway then personally i would bring most stuff out with you. i havent looked at how much bikes are over here so cant comment on that one but we go out on the bikes quite a lot and there are loads of bike trails all around adelaide, you can ride down to maclaren vale on the bike tracks, havent done that yet as quite a long way for my 2 year old, you can pick up all the maps with bike trails on from a bike shop, hope this is useful

Hi guys

we have read on previous threads that it is more expensive in Oz and people have advised to ship out your bikes but make sure they are immaculate, like Sarah says they jet washed theres there cant be any traces of soil etc,

While were on bikes can you hire them in Glenelg or surrounding areas ?

Thanks
Donna :)

On the subject of bikes.

We've had about three shipping agents to survey our belongings and the inconsistences in their advice is becoming apparent.

One said just jet wash bikes.

Another said jet wash then smother with WD40

The last said, jet wash NO WD40 as they will think that your hinding foot and mouth behind it. But then spray with Jeys fluid.

Good thing we've got about 3 - 6 months to think about it!

Hi, we bought new bikes at Kmart, they were very cheap, a ladies mountain bike for $89. But if you have some, why spend money here, when to put them in with your other stuff wouldn`t amount to much. Like Sarah, I would say bring everything out that is good, because once you get here it costs `heaps` to buy all new things. In fact if you are having a container, I would even go as far as to say replace all old with new there and ship it out. The choice and quality here is limited and is expensive too. Also on the day of the removers in the UK, they threw everything in, even things I was going to leave, so they are not that precise, how can they be.

Here's our experience, no doubt different yet again:

I steam cleaned our bikes, it's traces of mud and dirt they're most worried about on the way in.

Our packers (Bishops Move) provided disinfectant, sprayed bikes and some other outdoor stuff and certified it as properly treated.

Result: no problems whatsoever on the way into Oz.

We even brought tents, really scrubbed them till they were spotless inside and out. No problem there either.

Thanks for that Elaine,

We even have my sons beloved fishing gear!

Yeah, we brought fishing gear too - again, make sure it's spotless, scrub the box out too that it all goes into, and from our experience I really don't think you'll have a problem.

Just make sure your bikes are clean[no soil cont] jeyes fluid ,disinfectant stinks the whole container out, remember your furniture is in there as well,. As long as AQIS see you have made the effort they will be gentle with you, but on the other hand one spot of soil on any thing, and they will go through your shipment, totally. things that upset them, 1/ soil on tyres, soil on shoes, soil on out door furniture, golf clubs, gdn tools, 2/ fishing gear with bait attached.3/containers with water still in them, and yes ,hotwater bottles, thermos flasks ,with 3mth old coffee in them ;) 4/vacuum cleaners with bags still full, that really p#@@#S them off  .......mm
