Title: COST FOR SHIPPING, containers and cars
Description: England to Adelaide
vespasian - September 13, 2005 07:25 AM (GMT)
Hi
I have checked through the FAQ section, however there was zero reference to cost regarding shipping to Adelaide.
Can anyone who has completed the migration and shipping process please advise me how much it cost them to ship their stuff from the UK to Adelaide.
I need a 40ft container, which will not only take my furniture etc, I want to put my car in it also.
Any help with this would be appreciated.

We shared a 20 foot container, filled about half. So far it has cost £2400 approx, hasn't docked yet so don't know about any customs/AQIS fees.
That's with John Mason.

I think a 40' costs in the region of £5,000. Are you sure about the car? I assume you're aware of the duty and tax you get clobbered with when it arrives?

every company we have contacted has said not worth taking a car unless it's a classic. One said it would cost about 3 times its value
The quotes for the container also depend on where in the UK you are

Hmm that's a bit of a major omission...
Let's get all the info on here then we'll move this one over to faq ;)

It all depends on how much work they have to do as well as the actual size of container, for example wrapping a wardrobe would be much less work than packing up 10 boxes and would probably take up the same volume. Why don't you just call a few companies. They don't charge for quoting. Also bear in mind the time of year you are actually sending your container, we were told that the nearer Christmas you get the pricier it is. And of course the recent problems in the US have forced the cost of fuel through the roof. I read on AB that this would have a knock on effect in the shipping world also. But these are only my thoughts and only the experts can give you the answers that you need.

Thanks for the reply,
I have received a quote of 780 pounds to ship my car. I will have to ascertain what import type taxes will apply to it though, before making my descision.
The thing is I have a friend who owns his own freight forwarding company and he has stated that I will need a 40footer which he will build a frame in that will allow for the car and furniture etc, to be put in the same container.
As a mate he said that he would do it at cost for me, I however would like to get a feel for what other AB's shipping costs were for comparison. (Just in case he's not as good a friend that I thought he was)

I've looked into taking my car, it cost 6000 pound to buy in the uk.
You have to have driven and owned the car fror 12 months, just to give you an idea my 6k car will cost me 3500 pound to ship. You get taxed on the car plus all the import costs as well this added to the cost of the car, if your car is worth more than mine then it will cost you a fortune to ship over. Even more if its classed as a luxury car.
P>S the actually freight of the car only cost me 800 quid the rest is tax.

We had a quotes earlier in the year for a 40ft container to ship our motor plus house hold goods, costs ranged from £5500 to over £6000,then when the motor arrive's in Australia we would be hit with import tax at around £5000 plus GST tax, plus marine insurance which is around 1.5% to 3% of total value of your property inside the container.
Before all that you have to pay for a vehicle export permit, this money you have to pay regardless whether they grant the permit or not.
Best of luck on which road you take.
Kev :cool shake:
PS there are cheaper options to send your motor, called rolled on rolled off,but your motor is open to all elements the sea can throw at it and they won't guarantee the state your motor will arrive in Australia like.

Thanks for that,
Interesting about the import costs etc.
I didn't think it cost that much.
My position is that I have a year 2000 Audi A8, which has everything in it inc air, TV, sat nav, leather, it's a really lovely car. It cost me 37k from new, however now its 2nd hand value is around 10k if that.
I feel that it would fit in nicely on the Adelaide roads and the equivalent 2nd hand value in oz is double that of the UK, what's more is that german cars in oz are highly regarded and expensive to purchase, therfore I had thought that it would make economical sense to send it out there.
Who should I contact to ascertain the exact imoprt tax/permit costs etc.
Cheers

All i did fella was use google and you will eventually find the correct site. There was even one that give you an idea whether it was cheaper to bring your car or buy one in AUS, turned out I could make a thousand pounds on my car if I brought it with me. Just go through the immigration site and they will give you links if you look hard emough.
