There's a form called P85 Leaving the United Kingdom you can fill out if you want to claim tax back for the part of the year you have worked in the UK. I only know this coz I've got mine sitting ont he desk in front of me now, waiting for me to complete it and send it off (whoops!!)

If you are self employed the situation is different to PAYE taxpayers in that you (or your accountant) should be reviewing your tax cash flows: on 31/01/2006 you will probably be making an on account payment in respect of your 2005/06 tax liability (as well as accounting for any balance of tax payable or repayable for 2004/05). This on account payment will be based on your tax bill for the 2004/05 tax year.
If you finish self employment part way through the 2005/06 tax year it is likely your taxable income will be less than 2004/05 - which means the tax payment on account in January (and next July) can be reduced.
Best regards.
