Title: Brisbane
Nick - May 15, 2004 12:04 AM (GMT)
I don't mean to start a fight here but has anyone considered, lived or visited Brisbane when they were emigrating?
I am quiet happy with the thought of living in Adelaide but when I look at work for Chefs it seems there are about four times as many jobs going in Brisbane than Adelaide !!
We have some friends who emigrated there just over a year ago and are very happy with there choice. They chose Brisbane over Adelaide even though they had friends in Adelaide! They had also toured most of Australia some years before so had a good idea of what alot of places were like!
Also it is where most brits head to when going to Australia, it seems to have most of the qualities that we poms are hoping for!
I'm getting a little Pi**ed off with myself over this one as we are so near to coming out and I'm still pondering over this basic issue!!!!!
I know these things comes down to individual opinions but would like some of your view points on this. I believe that some of you must of looked into these two options so what do you think?
Nick :what?:

Sorry Nick, i cant really help much, but one of the main reasons we discounted Brisbane was the high humidity in summer. I cannot bare too much humidity.

House prices are about $50k more for the same in Adelaide. Its a bigger city, far more spread out, i personally love Brissy, been heaps of times, but my job keeps me in Adelaide. We have friends up there, they love the lifestyle and weather. the humidity is only for a couple of months. If i had the choice again ' knowing what we know now, Brisbane would be the place. Adelaides ok but too much red tape in the way of progression.

My husband Jon is a Chef by trade too but he went on to get his Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management and now works as a Duty Manager in a pub/hotel. Not that furthering his education got him anywhere, he just cannot get a better job here in Adelaide as its not what you know its who you know. Maybe considering Brissie might be the better option as we've often thought about moving to another state. Queensland would certainly be better as there's more of a need for the tourism industry.
Good luck whatever you decide.

Thanks guys I appreciate your honesty.
It's very interesting what you are saying Michelle about catering work being about "who" you know rather than what you know!! I think it at least a little this way most places but it doesn't help when you are moving to a new country!
Our relatives are going to be upset with us if we do decide to go to Brisbane instaed of Adelaide !
We have to do some serious thinking

Let us know if you do decide to head for Brisbane. :)
I won't get involved in which is better, as I haven't been to Adelaide, so I am unable to compare :) and as I don't actually work, I can't even give an opinion on that aspect.

We did look into Brisbane initially well in fact Queensland in general and discounted it due to the tourist bit (as I hated the thought of loads fo strangers just travelling through for the kids sake when they got older...I know I'm a parnoid mother!) and like PP the humidity put us off Queensland and NSW plus the extra creepy crawlers you get up that way. I also didn't like the layout of it all compared to Adelaide which seemed to have a nicer layout of the city and the suburbs with hills and coast to choose from.
I do know that Roy loved Brisbane when he travelled around oz, and Rach and Daz liked it when they went there recently, in fact they said it would have suited them better.
It is a hard decision to make. Have you thought about looking at both before settling?
Sasha :)

Hi Nick
Having visited them both, I would say that Brisbane and the surrounding Gold Coast/Sunshine coast, is more forward thinking and has more smaller towns of a viable size. They have more industry there (being the right side for transportation to asia) and also have the tourism side of things to bring in business/jobs. It is greener as they have more rain. We went in April, humidity not a problem at all, although I can imagine in Jan/Feb prob quite high but I think coming from England it wouldn't seem as bad as a south australian moving there, being used to a drier heat.
I suppose it comes down to what you want out of the experience, what sort of town you came from, how important it is to be close to your relatives out there, how you cope with being in a city.
I think Brisbane would have suited us better but still would have felt homesick.
Good luck, life is full of decisions isn't it!!!!

I think we are swaying towards Brisbane or the surrounding area at the moment! I do like Adelaide which I have visited twice but I feel that Brisbane may offer a better overall lifestyle.
We haven't even been to Brisbane except for our flight landing there when we were on our way back to old blighty via Cairns a couple of years ago!!
I feel a bit stupid to be honest as we have spent the last two years planning on Adelaide and now we only have a few months to go before coming out we have changed our minds!
The general feel I get from this forum and the expats one is that the majority of people that have been to both think Brisbane is the better bet.
I will now need to do alot of homework fast!

Don't feel stupid Nick, at least you are considering it now, not when you have put down roots in Adelaide,it's a lot more difficult to move when kids are in school/rental to give up/house to sell.Definately worth a visit to Brissy though just for your peace of mind.
Good luck

Welcome back Rachel, sorry to hear it didn't work out for you but as so many have said to you already at least you gave it a go. We know of a couple of families who have come back from different parts of Australia.
There are far too many people in life who are quick to shot you down for even daring to think about ideas that they themselves don't have the balls to even consider let alone try, so be prowd that you had the courage to try.
We are coming out with the attitude that if it was to go wrong for us at least we have had a go and shared a special life experiance as a family!
Blimey I'm getting a bit heavy here!! :sign07:
Don't forget to keep on posting and all the best.
