hi all, I have researched the asthma rates in the world and this is what I have found. the scottish have the highest rate of asthma sufferers at 18.4% in the world, then the australians, but it says the whole of oz, so not sure what area is the worst, wales is 4th at 16.8% and england is 6th at 15.3% indonesia and macau are at the bottom,
not that anyone wants to know, but I was worried when I was told adelaide has the highest rate, not quite as bad, but they did say it was because the asthma sufferers didnt have thei :bouncing smiles: r asthma under control. which would explain alot!!!!! laura

3 million Australians have asthma.
Asthma affects 300,000 South Australians.
Asthma affects both children and adults alike.
1 in 4 school children, 1 in 7 adolescents and 1 in 10 adults are affected by asthma in this state.
Asthma is a major cause of lost time in schools and workplaces.
Asthma is the most common chronic illness in children and adolescents.
Asthma causes more medical admissions of young children to public hospitals throughout South Australia than anything else.
Asthma was responsible for 31 deaths in South Australia in 2002

I'd say that if it affects 300 000 South Aussies and there's a population of 1.5 mill then thats 20% isn't it??

From my own personal experience my kids have been much worse since being here, but then who knows how they would have been in the UK?

The upside is that because childhood asthma is so prevalent it is well managed in schools and kindys, and child care facilities.

How readily available are asthma pumps - Ventolin and Beco-something-or-other. I know them better as Blue and Brown.

Should we bring a few - I used to be a bit wheezy and so is our youngest, or are they cheaper and available over the counter there?.

wizzywozza - May 16, 2004 10:27 PM (GMT)
You can buy ventolin over the counter - I had to get one in a hurry last week and it cost me $15. I have paid up to about $18 before now though. I'm not sure about buying brown ones (Becotide) over the counter.

My daughter is a chronic asthmatic and has severe attacks out of the blue so she has supplies at home. Generally our GP gives repeat prescriptions for all her drugs, and she has nebules by the truck load for her nebuliser. As I said there is such awareness of asthma here, that there are no probs getting anything you need.

Actually thinking about it - when I was in the chemist buying the ventolin last week they did ask me if I needed her preventer - so perhaps they do sell it over the counter too.
