Title: Giving Birth
Description: Has anyone had an Aussie birth?
janandrob - May 19, 2004 05:31 PM (GMT)
We were planning to complete our family when we get to Adelaide ( Why not add on more stress!) and was wondering if any of you have had a baby since arriving?
How did it compare to a U.K birth(if applicable) Are there any fees to pay or any health schemes you'd recommend?
Doin' our bit to up the S.A population!! ....... :medium smiley: Jan

Sorry I forgot to add that I had heard if you wish to go private for the birth you need to have been signed up for at least 12 months ??
So sign up for private health insurance as soon as you get there and then wait (or practise !!).

We had Megan over here....no big dramas
We were at Flinders Medical Centre...were gonna use the birthing suite, but Melanie had to be induced, so ended up in the normal delivery place.
All done as public patients.
Good experience (for me anyhow!!!)
Incidentally, the birth certificates you get over here are fantastic, very decorative.
I'll try and post an example

I hope there are no issues about copyright!!!
I got it from the
office of consumer and business affairsthey have more examples on their website

Hi, I had my daughter here, although 12 years ago. A great experience, she was born at Modbury Hospital, the nurses were great. We didn`t have private cover, and still don`t. The only thing I can remember paying for were scans. Since then the hospital has added a new birthing unit! Also the certificates are brilliant!

....so if I applied for a copy of my own birth certificate, would I get one of those? I want one too! The one I've got is very ordinary, plain and completed on a typewriter in those days!

I don't blame you Elaine they do look much better than the type you get over here in the UK. There'll be no faking that you are an Aussie from that birth certificate.
Sasha :)

I want one too! Thats a real work of art how lovely.
I think if I applied I'd get the plain typed red and cream one I have that in tatters.
Tracey.

Hi JanandRob ,Im a Aussie so didnt have to have medicals or anything .It has affected my ability to help hubbie pack though !!! :bouncing smiles:
I love that birth certificate ,its worth having another one just for that <_<
I quite like the idea of the birthing centres away from the normal wards but only if I can still have an epidural and I think I would have to go to the normal ward to stay for a couple more days .
Andy - May 20, 2004 10:49 PM (GMT)
birthing centres are for "plain old" easy births
anything more complicated (ie epidurals, drips, etc, then you go to the normal delivery area (I think...)
Snappy - May 21, 2004 08:00 AM (GMT)
Do they allow for home births out there?
Sasha :)
lynsteve - May 21, 2004 09:26 AM (GMT)
Our young fella Zak was born here 10 years ago at the Lyall Mcewan this was brilliant compared to Natalies 15 years ago at The Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham.
Steve and Lynsie

Both my cousins had c-sections and spent a good week or more in hospital. They were appalled that I was home after 4 hours with Katy (not a c-section) at my insistence, incidentally! I think the medical care in Oz generally is more extensive than in the UK, perhaps because it's part paid for?

Huh, just got my new certificate - and it's just a plain old ordinary one, none of the lovely certificate I was after :sigh: :sigh: :sigh:
Ah well, at least it's a little less dogeared than the one I had already...
