Title: Banks
Description: Can we avoid charges?
quaverwave - November 17, 2005 02:26 PM (GMT)
I know there must have been thousands of conversations like this before, but I can't seem to find any of the info I need.
Are there any banks in Oz that don't charge for their services? We want to open one before we arrive, but all of the ones we've looked at as recommended in FAQ's seem to charge.
Any more thoughts would be really appreciated. We've now sorting banks and removals out this week! Got 3 removal companies visiting next week! :sign61:
Thanks

All Aussie banks charge like wounded bulls!
I am with Powerstate Credit Union but even the credit unions have fairly high fees.

Westpac only charge $5 dollars a month to run two accounts. These fees cover any direct debits, transfers and atm withdrawls (as long as its one of there machines)
If you have a large sum of money to bring in the comonwealth bank will give you free banking as long as you invest it or take out a morgage with them.
Both the above named banks can be set up from the uk
Hope this helps a little bit.

Thanks Dougie. I've starred this thread for removal to FAQ when it's no longer 'live'. It will go in the Money section.

Here's an interesting one off Dougie's list - you can keep money in different currencies within the account and swap and change as you please, apparently.

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOray Jet
Ive been trying to tell these lot about Savings and loans for ages, we never pay bank charges, I think what puts the Brits off is when you say its a credit union, we`ve been with them for years, had our mortgage with and just about everything else, I CAN HONESTLY SAY WE DON`T PAY BANK CHARGES, if you use cheques you pay for them, go in and see them
Marion guys are really great
Sheila
Glad you se some sense in it Jet

Personally Sheila I don't use with them, my Mother recommended them. Unfortunately S&L don't have available the products we need to run our business'. ;)
I struck a deal with one of the big 4 (CBA) myself as we get fee free accounts due to our business relationship with them.
The link Dougie posted is really good for comparisons though.
Jet :)
