Title: Long shot, I know, but...
Description: I.T market in Adelaide

Matt and Rach - June 1, 2004 08:11 PM (GMT)
We're in the process of relocating from Swindon (wiltshire) to Adelaide with sponsorship from a local hospital for my wife to be a nurse there. I'm an I.T. systems developer with a local financial institution over here and I just wondered if anyone had any idea how hard it was likely to be for me to find a job over there. Spoken to a couple of people who've said that Adelaide's a piddly little place with no I.T. market and I'd have to look in one of the larger cities, but the people who told me this freely admit to never having been there. Wondered if anyone knew better.....

HI Matt & Rach
And welcome to the site!

I'd hardly call Adelaide a piddly little place... then again it's not enormous either. A certain amount of it is down to how much your own skills are wanted and how flexible you are prepared to be - like taking something well beneath you for a bit and working back up to where you are now.

Try the jobs page on www.advertiser.com.au which may give you some idea.
Also www.seek.com.au where you can type in your requirements and they'll email matching posts to you - leave that running for a couple of months and you'll see how many responses you get.

People's experiences with jobs vary from my husband - a chartered accountant who found work within a week of getting here - to those who've found it very hard. Don't know about IT specifically though, I suspect that may be harder than some.

Hi there
Adelaide is not a piddly little place, I think its the nicest place in Australia
its like a big country town, if you want the london type scene then its best to go to the eastern side. there is no nicer place to bring up kids than here
What part of Adelaide are you heading to?
try careerone.com.au for jobs

Hi Shiraz - welcome to the site!

Are you in Adelaide? How long have you been here?
If you've been here a while we'll all be picking your brains as the majority of us are pretty new to the place!

Hello Matt and Rach - Welcome to the site firstly. I just wanted to ask if you could expand on your title as a systems developer for a financial institute as if you develop software then there are several types of software used in the financial market out there that aren't really used here but along the same lines. Or are you more into system analysis which is more of a broader spectrum?

My lines of thinking if you are more aiming to go into the financial market out in Adelaide then maybe Howard could ask about for you otherwise maybe Gilsa who works for an agency on here might be able to help you further.

Shiraz - Welcome to the site and it's nice to have someone else who is already out there living the dream or at least knows more about Adeliade than most of us UK bunch. How long have you been out there?

Sasha :)

Hi Sasha,
I'm a programmer primarily, with experience using C++, C#, vb6, vb.net, html, asp, javascript and sql. Looked on a website that someone suggested (can't remember what it was called) prior to finding adelaideBrits, and there seemed to be quite a few jobs looking for linux/unix experience rather than microsoft technologies - is this really the case, or was I looking on the wrong website?!

Snappy - June 2, 2004 10:35 PM (GMT)
I've never heard of vb6 and vb.net though so what applications would you use these in?

I'll see if I can come up any other websites for you as I have a list of different sites that I've made during several searches in the past.

Now it usually goes right over my head when Howard starts on about programming, but as far as I know vb is Visual Basic...

 of course it is :loopy:

Matt I've just been doing a bit of search for you and by the looks of it there are plenty of jobs that suit you around Adelaide. Go to the website www.seek.com.au as Elaine has suggested and 72 jobs in IT came up for Adelaide.

Some of them won't be suitable for you but there were several business computer anayalsts listed and others that I came across included webdesign listed the programming skills you possess so I can't see there being a problem at all with finding a job out in Adelaide.

Why not email a few of the companies and see what response you get, or try emailing a couple of the agencies, here's a couple....

http://www.execres.com.au/
http://www.workskillsprofessionals.com.au/job_bul_adel.html - these had a nice job as a games programmer C and C++ required

One asked if you were MCSD certified which is certification as a Microsoft Certified Systems Developer (MCSD). This maybe somethign you could look into over here unless you are already certified as the Aussies love there certificates!

I hope that helps.

Howard's an MCP - Microsoft Certified Professional. When he told me the initials of the qualification he'd just worked so hard to get he wondered why I fell about laughing.

After all who'd want to advertise that they're an MCP :bouncing smiles:

Hi Sasha - have you come down off the ceiling yet? I mean - are you still dancing and snogging?

:mr man:

Snappy - June 17, 2004 01:25 PM (GMT)
I have started to calm down a bit - not snogging so many people today as I managed to get most of them yesterday but still have a dance every now and then :D
