Title: Any Day Jobs for Electricians!
debbie30 - January 4, 2006 08:45 AM (GMT)
Can anyone help?
We have been here 9 weeks and finding things a bit difficult to be honest.
My husband is an Electrician who has passed his Aussie Wiring rules but is struggling with his ARTC (they are very slow).
He is currently looking for a DAY job around the northern suburbs area and can't seem to find anything at all. Can anyone assist us? We have used all the usual web sites and turned up very little!
He says if he can't find anything suitable soon we'll be on the next plane home, as he had plenty of work in the UK.
This tops it all off for me as christmas was odd without our family around (although we've made some new friends which helps!) and i don't drive and there seems very little to do for our young children, on top of which public transport in our area is limited unless i walk about 3/4 of a kilometer up hill. No fun in 30-40 oC as i have tried it!
I really would appreciate any advice as we are desperatley looking for a positive amongst what seems like endless negatives at the minute.
Don't want to moan, and don't really want to go home, but at the mo that's the way its going for us.
Cheers Debz

Has your hubbie given any thought to doing any type of work for the time being whilst he waits for his licence to come through.I read on a thread ages ago this can take up to 5 months.
Best of luck

Hi Debz :D
So sorry to here that your having a bad time. You don't realise how absolutely
vast emigrating is until your here. Your fast approaching the 3 month mark which in my opinion is the low point in emigrating...so hang on in there......it will get better honest! How old are your kids? Perhaps a few of us could meet up near to you.
As for the job situation..... Well I have to be a bit brutal and say that you can't afford to be picky when your new here (sorry  ) Alot if not most of the companies here operate a continental shift pattern, including weekends and nights. Rob (my other half) has done this since day one. It's a pain at times and a disruption to family life but you need to get your foot on the Aussie work ladder
THEN you can look around for that dream job with some Aussie experience to help you through. To some extent you start at a lower level again in your job, what experience/academic status you had in England doesn't have much 'clout' here :( Rob was lucky he got a job (he's an electrician too) as soon as we arrived through this guy (Geoff Poole)
gpoole@challengeltd.com Give him a call, you never know. Be flexible. Rob hadn't passed any wiring regs at that point but they gave him a less responsible role until he gained his 'A Class' license.
Think of the
end desired result of your move not the present which is still all new and strange :loopy: It takes a long while to feel anything like home here. Are you renting? I ask as buying our own place made a big difference to me personally.
I wish you all the best,
Jan

I got the impression there was alot of work for electricians around the Adelaide area , or is this just a myth ?.Is there work is some areas of south Australia for electricians or is it difficult wear ever you go.
We are hoping to be out there in September , i am giving my own business up in the uk to work as an electrician there.

THe way I understand it there's masses of work - but only once you have the certificate in your sticky little mitt. The co. I used to work for used to share electricians with another co. as neither could recruit enough.
It can take a couple of months or more to do the test and pass it, then they want 3 months to send the certificate to you, so you might end up waiting 5 or 6 months before you can work at your trade
Have you read all the threads in FAQ Work section about electricians? Some of the guys on here have put up fantastic info. Also it might give you some names to PM about more specific info as you'll know who the sparks are!

There is plenty of work for sparkies, both for contracting work and for permanent placements. Dont worry about finding a job !!!!! As for the licence, it took me 11 weeks from arrival to get the licence in my hand, most the time waiting for the TRA to re-check qualifications etc.

Hi,
The company i work for aren't recruiting at the moment but I heard Nilsens ( 8440 5300 ) have won a large contract up North in Sailsbury might be worth giving them a try. Also, Boffa and Russo ( 8369 3333 ) seem to be busy and they're based up North. Might also be worth trying Welsh and Leo ( 8340 8322 ) who take on casual aswell as permanent, they're based on South Road ( just up from the junction of Port Road ) and also AR Leane ( 8297 9255 ), and Watters ( 8356 7200 ). These companies are the larger electrical contracors in the commercial / industrial fields. Agencies are also a good way of breaking into the market. As most companies close over christmas it's been a bit quiet in the last few weeks. However, this year will see a boom in construction in Adelaide with various projects given the go ahead so there should be no trouble finding work so long as you have an A class license. If you are just waiting for your ARTC explain this to potential employers as they may take you on initially as a trade assistant ( wages won't be as good but it's only temporary ). In any case, most employers have a 4 - 12 week probation period so you may get all your paperwork through in the meantime. Hang in there though as you will find that you have to start at the bottom and work your way up. Perhaps one of the mods could put the contact numbers on FAQ and anyone else could add to it also. Good luck :)
Paul
