Title: Mediterranean???
Description: How does Adelaide really compare

Elaine - January 7, 2006 12:23 PM (GMT)
Just a thought that occurred to me. How does Adelaide weather really compare to the Mediterranean? It's generally described as being similar, but if you look at http://weather.cloader.net/cgi-dir/showgra...i?city=Adelaide you will begin to get an idea how 'up and down' the weather really is. All the time. It's quite normal to have 20 degrees difference between one day and the next.

Anyone out there able to find a similar site for say the S. of France and see whether it really is comparably changeable? Or is it just the 'averages' which are similar? I'd love to know!

This is only from observations while on 2 weeks holiday in Spain - but I seem to remember the temperatures being pretty constant. I have a weather ticker on my browser and it really is strange seeing 38C one day and 20 the next.

The Med does stretch for a hell of a long way (Gibraltar in the west to Israel in the east). I suppose it depends where the stats were taken from.

It does'nt.

You can count on the med to be hot & sh*tty every August. (all day, every day)

nothing like it.

Nothing like the Med weather at all...it starts really pi**ing down here from June onwards and doens't really stop until Nov/Dec. The rain doesn't bother me too much, it's just the cold winters that do! I know we don't get sub-zero temperatures, however I didn't expect to use the heating for 6 months of the year!!!

Queensland here we go...

We've just been exploring this one a little more...

Latitude of the Med and Adelaide is similar, at around 30 - 45 Med, Ad 36.

And I've finally found something to compare, though heaven knows it wasn't easy and I've been searching for ages!

Here's some data for Corfu, Greece http://www.corfunet.com/weather/archive.php?y=2005

You can get the daily temp and humidity records for each month in each year listed. Now to go and see how it compares.... but first impressions are that the summer months have generally far less variation in temp, and it's unusual for temps to go far above 30 C.

Corfu is about 39 - 40 degrees latitiude though... perhaps I should keep trying for a closer comparison.

Does anyone realise Queensland is tropical, it rains there too, is very humid, and occassionally has terrible storms and very wild weather?

Nowhere is perfect weatherwise here. Everywhere gets hot, cold, wet, dry, hail, storms, gales, clouds, sun, you name it. Just that on the whole South Australia has a drier heat, unlike the northern states where it's tropically humid.

The Med has long summers March to October and mild winters, sunny by day cold at night.
We lived in Cyprus and winter 2004 saw the first decent rain for 4 years, also the temp is more consistant in the summer, everyday the same- hot dry heat minus the Flies

Nothing like the med, it never rains as much and has such extreme temps from day to day.

We opted for Adelaide for this supposed med climate and have been very dissapointed, it closer to the UK climate with difference of the days being hotter, give me the med climate any day.

I also miss the summer days lasting till after 10 at night instead being dark at 8.30pm.

Can't see the comparison either, we've been to spain and greece, many times and the weather is totally consistent once the season starts.
We went to Corfu once in May and the weather was in the 40's then, and although we only went for 2 weeks, there was no drop in temperature.
You may get the odd thunderstorm but that is to be expected when it is hot and they by no means have the drop in temperatures that I have experienced here.

Not whingeing, just comparing, just in case someone wants to get on their high horse again.

If you don't like the rain, Queensland is probably the last place you would want to go (after all it is the wettest place in Oz)....

We lived in Cyprus every summer for a few years and it was the same everyday, pretty much like this week but a lot hotter (We are talking 40c). It still doesn't rain that much here in Adelaide, 2005 was a bit of an exception so I'm told, you might want to wait until the end of March when you'll all be begging for rain because you would not have seen it for so long....and as for the same as the UK, that's quite laughable really considering it is hotter here than August in London for about eight months of the year

One thing about the Med though, you don't get the same culture as over here.... if you love slimey blokes dribbling over your missus at the beach then the Med is for you, if you want a nice cold beer with some good banter, come to Oz

You can get hot humid weather , and you can get SNOW, who would have thought

Hi,

I actually think the weather here is perect, we have been here since April, so have yet to complete our first full year.

Now, every one keeps saying how much rain we have had, I think its just a bit different here, when it rains it usually happens at night or we get tons of the stuff for maybe a morning. Ross being a bricklayer was rained off from work all year round in the Uk (on average about 2 months a year), here, he has had about 1 day out because of rain and 1 day because it got too hot. Also in the Uk he used to get frozen off !!!! the temperature has to be 3c and rising to lay bricks, obviously here we dont have that problem.

However, on the weather channel, on foxtel there are very interesting reports on rain and water conservation. Even though SA is the driest state, Adelaide actually gets nearly gets as much rain as London and Sydney actually get more!! Queenland gets flippin loads!!! SA is a big state, including very dry inland area's that gets virtually no rain.

The rain here is not like the damp, grey, drizzzly days you get for weeks in the uk. Most mornings here you wake up to bright blue skys. So as I said before, I think the weather is perfect :D

GT I deleted your comments to Sunnyj, no need for the personal attack.

Julie I also removed your reply to GT. because i think it would have just snowballed

I dont really understand why people have to Quote or comment on other members points of view when they dont agree with them.
All you need to do is put your view across, there is no need to slag off someone elses comments just because you dont agree with them.

If you want to reply to this please pm me.

Thanks Vince ;)

Yeap I can say that one is true we are living 20 minutes away from Australia's wettest town called Tully it has a giant golden gum boot as yo drive into Tully which shows the highest amount of rainfall they have ever had....8.5 METRES not centimetres but METRES :o

This is the only area in Australia where the Bruce Highway still gets flooded and gets cut off. They haven't had a proper wet season for years but last year it rained non stop for 10 days and I mean rain as in seriousl pelting it down with no break whatsoever...normally it will do this for say 10 weeks non stop though in a true wet season.

We should be heading into cylone weather as well so all in all Queensland DOESN' T have the best of weather ;)

I remember back quite a few years ago as a teenager the climate here was more consistant and could easily be compared to a Mediterranean climate.

As mentioned it the news lately global warming has had an effect on the weather here over the past few years, perhaps this could be the answer for current climate change in Australia.

I just hate it that my Easter Lillies are coming up at Christmas, not too mention all the other plants that don't flower when they are supposed to.

Jet :)
