Title: Voluntary work in Oz
kazza - June 3, 2004 02:57 PM (GMT)
I'm just trying to get my head around what I'll be doing once we get out to Oz. Hopefully I'll be able to get some part-time work, but if not, I'd like to do some voluntary work. Are they crying out for volunteers over there, or is it difficult to get this kind of work?

Karen speak to Elaine as she once posted about how in schools they had quite a lot of volunteers as opposed to people getting paid to be playground assistants (or whatever they are called!) in fact I'm sure she did something along this line or was I just dreaming it! It would fit in around school holidays etc then.

Voluntary work is HUGE out here. You can do just about anything you fancy. I'm a volunteer with Riding for the Disabled. There is a website for all sorts of volunteers in SA - I'll see if I can find it.

I was also thinking of the volentry sector as at the moment I'm in a volentry role with a youth counselling agency near to where I live, I do this in addition to the private practice I run from home.
Would love to hear about these sort of organisations in Adelaide.
Thanks Tracey.

If you have kids at school, the schools are always after voluntary help and it's a good way to start making a circle of friends. Most schools have a canteen that operates on almost 100% volunteers! I've been doing that once a week, making up meals and selling lollies (sweets) to the kids at recess and lunchtime. It's great fun, and a good chance to get into conversation with other helpers.
Also the P&F (Parents and Friends) for the school organises all sorts of events and I've had a hand there too.
I know they also have helpers with reading etc but havn't got involved myself.
And some of us were talking about this with PP just yesterday - when I was in the shower I had sudden inspiration of the perfect voluntary work for you PP! You need to get in touch with the Meet & Greet and become a Meeter & Greeter! :D

Oooh this looks interesting!
http://www.volunteeringsa.org.au/volunteerjobs/There's a search facility for jobs of various types - I could be a gardener at Adelaide Gaol, or teach English to Vietnamese immigrants, or various work for the Red Cross or Salvos, or how about 2 years of unpaid conservation work abroad  . North Adelaide Hospital - mail runner and relief driver for hospital car. The list goes on and on, and I only ticked a few categories. Yep, this is what you're after! Guess I'll put it in Links too.

That's the link I was looking for!
Always worth looking in the local Messenger newspaper too - quite often voluntary groups put ads in there.
