Title: Interstate removalist

Calvin - January 12, 2006 04:00 AM (GMT)
Hello All,

Just wondering if anyone can recommend an interstate removals company who's competitively priced and provides a good level of service?
I need to move a 3 bedroom house worth of gear/furniture etc. from Adelaide to Brisbane.

Any help/recommendations would be appreciated.

Calvin

Hi Calvin,

Now, please be honest and why the move from Adel to Bris ?

Calvin - January 13, 2006 12:12 PM (GMT)
Hello Mikey B,

To answer your question, my family & I moved here as I was offered a job based in Adelaide from the UK. On previous holidays we had visited all the other major Oz cities/areas and generally liked what we saw (i.e. Bright, modern, forward thinking etc.), but unfortunately we had never visited SA.
However after reading all the posts on the Ad brits website extolling the benefits of the Mediterranean climate (Eh?) etc. we thought it couldn’t be too bad and decided to take the job offer.
In hindsight, I should have turned it down as we now think the following of Adelaide:
- It’s cold and miserable June to October. I didn’t move here to be cold so I’ll quite gladly take my chances with the ‘terrible’ humidity of the Gold coast.
- It’s a bit limited in the old things to do/see front - Once you’ve checked out the Barossa, Mount Lofty, Victor Harbour and Glenelg what is there left to do? I have a young family so the numerous attractions on the Gold & Sunshine Coast suit our circumstances.
- It’s a nice place if you enjoy being intimate with flies. The only place I have seen them worse was at Uluru.
- The beaches are average at best compared to other regions of Oz.
- It’s too remote. Drive an hour and half out of the city and you are smack bang in the middle of nowhere.
- It’s at least 20 years behind the rest of Australia in areas such as development, road networks etc and looks a bit scruffy as a result.

Therefore after sticking it out for a year, we have decided to move to Brisbane as we believe the area is more suited to our current needs.
Note: Before anyone gets their knickers in a twist about the above (I know on this forum one should not slate Deadalaide, sorry Adelaide) please remember it is only my opinion. You have yours and I have mine.

Hi Calvin,

I think you've hit the 'nail on the head' there... ;)

I believe a lot of people will agree with your comments and it's good to see someone being open and honest on this forum. You are entitled to your opinion and should not be slated in any way for your comments.

Bang on bro.

Stevo.

PS about $4000 for a average 3 bed house to remove.

Hi Calvin, have you been reading our minds or listening in on our conversations because we have said exactly the same. We have been here since October.
Having sampled the Gold Coast for 2 weeks before we came down here, we also are quite dissapointed with Adelaide. There is so much more to do and see in Queensland in general, yes there is the downside of humidity and maybe more creepy crawlies and more rain but at least the place has more life.
I can't believe though that anyone with a 136 visa would come here in the first place. Brisbane was our first decision to go to before the points rise but we had to go STNI, therefore we have to stay here for 2 years.

You only have to read the paper to see that tourism is down, I wonder why?
They are blaming poor transport systems and the delayed opening of the domestic terminal at the airport.
Not the fact that there is no money being put into the state to encourage people to come here.
They need more than the wine regions and kangaroo island, to get people to come from interstate.

Don't get me wrong, we are not having a dreadful time here, we are getting used to it, and now that the weather has picked up it's not too bad,but it is a make-do place for us

No doubt our views will be shot down in flames again, but frankly who cares, we have our opinions they have theirs.

Good on ya mate. :cool shake:
Keep us posted on your move and your new life.

Julie

Again bang on.

I have the in-laws arriving shortly for a 2 week visit and we will be taking them on a weeks tour to Sydney and Surfers and spending the other week here in SA to do the usual sights (Glenelg, Wine Region, Victor etc, etc).

I think if we'd spend the whole 2 weeks here with them then I'd have to get them an Adelaide Brits 'log In' to pass the time.

Be honest, how many people are actually on this site 24/7!

Brisbane Bayside site isn't half as active....

delboy - January 14, 2006 02:19 AM (GMT)
So did you find an Interstate removalist Calvin.

It would be great if you could post some of the quotes you get so we can archive it in the FAQ section for future reference.

Good luck with the move.

Vince

I'm hoping to have some quotes in the next few days, so I'll post them then.

wizzywozza - January 14, 2006 08:52 AM (GMT)
Friend of mine works for Crown.

This is not a personal recommendation as I have never used a removalist, but you can email her on thedge@crownrelo.com if you want to arrange a quote.

BTW last time I saw her she was telling me they are shipping up to 15 British families a month from Adelaide - back to the UK!

We do get flies in Queensland ;) and we do have a limited things to do here as well once you've done all the tourist things, talking to people up here they even light fires in the winter as they do get cold here as well and we're in the tropical north where it is even warmer than Brisbane, and the cities can be stinking dirty places just as any other city in places and after travelling over Queensland I can definately vouch the roads have seen better days in places.

Don't get me wrong I love it here but just to point out it isn't the be all and end all answers for everyone as I always feel people think Queensland is a place of all answers but it also has it's downsides just as everywhere else.

I do hope you find what you are looking for when you move Calvin as I've noted you have been thinking about this move for a while, so good luck to you and your family ;)

Sasha :)

Hi Sasha
When do you hit Adelaide?
Your posts seem to be well balanced and informative and I'm interested in what you make of Adelaide when you finally get there. (Not sure if you have ever been there before)

But this is what i like about sth Australia, i can jump in the ute throw my swag and fishing gear in , and with in 2hrs be fishing a remote beach on yorke penninsular, and not see another person.
Cold winter nights in front of a roaring log fire , eating soup from home grown veggies,
Adelaide is a very conservative city, were things move slowly, and any one with a sense of urgency, say some one from London/Sydney is going to find it a very frustrating place to live ,i deal with people from all sectors when it comes to moving .
Many see Adelaide as a downside to their careers, after the the end of their contract, say 2yrs , i have known of people to resign and take a job else were, just to avoid being sent back to melbourne or Sydney.
Once this city gets a hold on you , once you stop and smell the roses, taste the wine ,sample the resturants ;) you will never leave.
We went to a restaurant, at the marina in Glenelg last night,[sumo] walked in asked for a table were seated and served within 5 mins , even on a monday night in Brisbane , this is not going to happen.
I have worked in Darwin ,Townsville, and Brisbane and the humidty is not nice to work in, it saps the strenght from you slowly, give me 40deg in Roxby any day ;)
Sorry about the long post, normally only talk about moving etc, but while a lot of what Calvin has said is true, Adelaide has its good points , you just have to look a little harder[imho]...............................mm ;)

Adelaide to Brisbane removal quotes as requested by Del Boy.

The quotes are for a full 20ft container with my wife & I packing the majority of the small stuff and the bulkier items being packed by the removal companies.

As you can see vary quite a bit:

- Crown = $4818.
- Chess = $3750.
- Wridgeways = $3674.
- Tee Tree gully removals = $3300.
- Kent = $2970.
- All States removals = $2530.
- To hire a truck from Budget and do the whole move yourself = $2300.

I hope this is of use to some of you.
