Title: Snake stuff
Andy - January 13, 2006 06:53 AM (GMT)
Had a little visitor this morning....little brown snake

Employed my trusty crab rake as a "snake shifter" and moved it to a more appropriate spot....made us both feel better I think

i've seen a few snakes recently, but mostly they're too fast for me and my camera.
not this black snake though. snapped it crossing my path.

They're all over the place, it's more a question of spotting them.
They're a bit like koalas......until you know what you're looking for, and where they are likely to be, and how they look in the tree....you never see em!
Once you've seen a few, you kind of "get the eye" for spotting them....., then you see em all the time!
similar for snakes.
Don't forget....no way do they want to have any contact with you whatsoever, so chances are they will buzz off as soon as they can feel you coming.
If you do bump into them, it's generally in the morning as they need to warm up and are a bit dozy until they do

funny enough i usually see blacks and not browns.
its true abut the koalas untill we'd been shown a koala we had never seen one(execpt in a zoo), now we see them lots, although mostly in belair.
I'll go out looking for snakes, i'll tread quietly, and go through long grass.
I always wear boots and jeans, and look were i'm stepping.
mostly i never see a thing.
i've seen living snakes at;
onkaparinga national park
mount barker summit
kuitpo forest
scott creek conservation park
ive seen harmless blind snakes in my garden.

ever seen a death adder on your travels?
That's a cool snake
we're probably on the outskirts of distribution here but I reckon the Flinders ranges would hold a few
extremely venomous though
and highly sensitive to cane toad toxins apparently
Andy - January 13, 2006 01:10 PM (GMT)
think I've posted it before, but it's a good site.....
http://www.toxinology.com/index.cfmthough mildly scary
Olive101 - January 13, 2006 01:17 PM (GMT)
We saw our first at Freeman's Nob overlooking Horshoe Bay in the Fleurieu - it was a dark grey colour and about 1.5m lond - we THINK it was a common brown snake (albeit not a brown one!)
I'd attach a photo but I have no idea how to do so!

have just cut and paste from the "photo section"
Ok, step by step..........
(I will base these instructions on photobucket, but there are other similar sites)
1. Register an account with photobucket, (go to
http://photobucket.com/, and click on "sign up".
2. Begin uploading photos...you can sort them into albums etc, and fiddle about with sizes, rotate, etc, etc
3. When you want to put up a pic on Adelaidebrits....
a. Log in to your photobucket page, find the pic or pics that you want to use, then click on the little tickbox under the photo(s) that you want to use.
b. Scroll down the page and click on where it says "Generate HTML and IMG code"
c. This will take you to a new page - scroll down to where it says "IMG clickable thumbnails for message boards - recommended"
d. Right click on all the blurb that is written underneath "IMG clickable thumbnails for message boards - recommended", (it should be highlighted automatically), then click "copy" (the blurb looks something like....[ URL=http://photobucket.com/albums/ v162/andy19363/?current=Im000300.jpg&action=view]IMG]http://img. photobucket.com/albums/v162/andy19363/th_Im000300.jpg[/IMG])
e. Go to Adelaidebrits -> Members area -> Picture Album -> whichever pics forum you require, and start a new topic
f. In the box you would normally write in, give a description of the pics, then on a new line, right-click and select "paste". All the blurb you highlighted before should appear.
g. Click "preview post", to check it works, then click "post new topic"
h. Stand back and admire your handiwork!

actually i have seen a snake in the flinders, but it was too far away to make any identification.
anyone in england, who lives near the mendips, can visit priddy pool in spring and summer, there are lots of snakes there.
they're much less timid than australian ones and will just lay there.
Bedbug - January 13, 2006 11:34 PM (GMT)
A German friend of mine, told me that snakes can be found all over Adelaide. He reckons that they like to get onto cars. He said that they are usually black in colour and anything from 8" to 16" long, and are NOT venomous apparently, he said they are called Vindscreen Vipers.

I heard they get them in England too. They're active all year round there, but mostly only in the winter here....

I was the one lugging a huge Bras n Things bag about - dammit I hate their sales they MAKE me spend a fortune on undies.
BTW no snakes up my way lately but lots of blue tongue lizards - never seen as many before, they are everywhere.

My first snake and only live close up snake was a red bellied black snake about 1.5 metres long. Crossed a path literally only a metre or so ahead of us and we watched it disappear into the bush.....so much for chasing us wanting a munch! ;)
