:help:

Hi everyone, this is my first post!!!!

My wife and I are looking to move over to Adelaide next December. Does anyone have any advice or experience about working in secondary education? I am a 37y old Head of Mathematics and Belinda teachers business, accounts and economics.

If you know anyone who works in a school who I could get some help and ideas from that would be fantastic.

One more thing

Any Adelaidebrits out there want to buy me some test match tickets?

Cheers

Rob

HI Rob and Bel, and welcome to the forum.

Have you checked out the FAQ forum yet? There's a whole section on job related issues, though I'm not sure how well teaching is represented there.

We do have a few teachers who come on from time to time, so with any luck you'll get a few answers. I know it's not easy to teach in state schools, you have a fair few hoops to jump through and it's always far easier to find work in regional/country areas than in the city, but it's not impossible.

Best of luck!

Hi Rob , welcome to the site !! I'm sure that you will find all the help that you need here .
I am no expert on the subject , BUT from what I can gather from friends (teachers ) and general opinion it is really difficult to get a teaching post within Adelaide itself . The system is very different and posts rarely become available.
There are posts out there , but these tend to be in more rural or remote areas (ads for posts in Coober Pedy in the paper this week !)

I would suggest that you check out the Advertiser which prints most vacancies each Saturday , contact Decs (Dep of Ed and childrens services ) and speak to teachers already over here.

Wishing you good luck :D

Hi we read the site a lot but don't post often but thought I would reply with some info.

Our application is currently with DIMIA and I am a sec science teacher

I have looked extensively at info and also have a friend of the family in Adelaide who works in Education. As far as I can see you should be able to get work look at the DECS website and on the Advertiser, there are always jobs advertised especially for maths and science (we are lucky these are the subjects no-one wants to teach!).

The system in Australia is different where you apply to DECS and are employed by them and they place you in a school. Once you are emloyed they do release a Schools choice system each year where you can apply to schools of your choice for a placement which is usually for several years. This really bothered me at first but now I think it is good as you can see a few schools and then decide which ones to apply to. Supply teaching is also done through them on placements from one day to several weeks. You can refuse a placement but you are only allowed to do so a few times before they stop offering work but obviously this is not a good idea.

There is also a private school system where you apply direct to the schools but the ones I have seen a lot seem to be church schools. These are usually advertised in The Advertiser careers section. There seem to be a lot more private schools in Australia than here. There is an independent schools association see their web site
www.ais.sa.edu.au

You can lodge an application with DECS from the UK, I have done this but they cannot finalise it and offer you work until you have your visa. You also need to be registered with the Teacher Registration Board of SA to be able to teach. This is a legal requirement and you can be fined if you don't. You can also apply for this from the UK see their web www.trb.sa.edu.au. You also need to do courses in First Aid and Child Protection once you arrive before they will allow you to teach (this has to be their courses not ones done here).

You need to read all the info loads of times (I did anyway) for it to sink in with it being a slightly different system but email them, I have found all these places to be really helpful. There is also a section on teachers pay scales and school dates on the DECS site.

If you are going to apply for these things from the UK you will need copies of all your documents etc and your skills assessment so bear this in mind when getting things photocopied and signed as true copies of the original.

Hope this helps I can't think of anything I have missed but let me know if you have any further questions and I will try to help. Good Luck!
