Has anyone who is here on the SIR visa applied for permission to buy a house?

Did you have to be here for 12 months before being alloed to buy an already occupied house?

Could you only buy a new property?

What are you experiences of the process?

Any help and inof would be good.

Thanks

Kay

Hi Kay

Sara and I have looked into this and there are Adbrits members on SIRs who have purchased.

I've looked back through the posts but can't remember their names, sorry.

I do recall that they said that permission was needed from IFIRB(?) but that was dealt with by their real estate agent who simply filled in a form and after ten days in Adelaide, they moved into their new home!

I certainly hope it's that easy for us!

See you soon

Graham

Hi Kay :bouncy:

Our friends have recently moved to Adelaide on a SIR visa and had to ask permission before buying. 2 weeks later they were in there new house (when I say new, it is 2yrs old but has never been lived in). I dont think they had any problems but I can try and find out more info for you, I will let you know!!!

Take care

It can be done pretty quick,I've heard through the grape vine the Witcomb Gang have just applied to buy a property on a SIR visa and has been granted, they have only just arrived in Adelaide,I don't think you can contact them as yet, their computer is still on the docks.

Hi,
Yes there are no problems buying a house whilst on SIR. As already said you just need to fill in the forms for FIRB and get the agent to send them off. When they write up the contract the agent should write 'subject to FIRB approval', so you are protected. It states that it could take 28 days but ours only took 7.
You can buy old or new for your first property. If you then decide to buy another house, whilst still having your dwelling, it has to be new.
We have done this as well with no problems All imformation can be viewed here.

Hi,

Thanks for that - when I was reading the FIRB website last night I was getting quite despondent and confused. I thought that we might have to wait a year before we could buy.

Hi

You don't have to wait any length of time before you purchase a house, the only condition is that you have at least 12 months left on your visa, and that you sell the property if you leave the country.
