Title: My story
Description: 15 Months on

delboy - February 3, 2006 09:41 PM (GMT)
This is my opinion,

We have been here 16 months we arrived here having never visited before, no family or friends but did have one friendly contact Nicki (Pickledpossum) lovely Lady I might add and im sad she's gone.

she invited us to our first meet the week we arrived which was really great meeting people that had been through the process.

Kittenlips

Wizzywozza--although not at the meet

All made us feel very welcome, yes we did want to fit in to the ozzie way of life but the initial contact with fellow poms is a must in my opinion.

do I want to fit in to ozzie culture?? of course I do.

Will I ever become Australian?? not a chance, English born and bread nothing can change that. Once a pom always a pom :D

on the Job front...

This was probably my biggest worry, supporting my significant other and three kids as I could only find a hand full of company's on the net while in the uk that had websites, but I did contact them and receive positive reply's.

I had 3 interviews in 4 weeks and took the first one that was offered, probably could have had a choice but didn't want to chance it

I'm still working there now and although some treated me like I had just come out of apprenticeship the majority were just fine, all very friendly.

I did feel the need to prove myself which was fair enough as they didn't know me from Adam but that wasn't a problem because I knew how good I was (sorry to blow my own trumpet) :D and in time so would they.

Anyway I've now been there about 14 months, 3 pat increases and am now on $100 more than when I started.

You want company's to give you a fair go? then you have to give them a fair go too.

We probably have a combined income of below $60,000 a year and we manage with a $200,000 mortgage.

No its not that easy but our goal is being achieved, a better future for our children.

Compare SA to England and you get what you pay for.

yes you pay medical expenses here but health care is much better.

Yes you pay school fees but my kids have come on in leaps and bounds. could be down to the style of teaching.

I used to dread reading negative posts when I was back in the uk cos id think god what have I done.

I really did just have to ignore them, stay focused on my goal and commit to the move.

I'm lucky, it has worked out for me and I know it can now only get better.

I really do feel sorry for people that are unhappy here or are making the move back to the U.K.

But at least you;ve tried it and will never think to yourself "I wish we could live in Australia.

I'm not as eloquent as most of you on here so forgive my dodgy post.

And remember these are just my thoughts, im not starting a debate or having a go at anyone's choices.

Great post. After reading some other posts over the last few days I have to be honest and say I was starting to s   t myself about Adelaide. Its not that I don't want to hear the down sides but when you read so many rose-tinted glasses posts the reality posts are like a kick up the ar*e. This post has balanced out both of those views and a very sensible way of explaining things without getting personal(reading some other posts I have wondered have I entered the young peoples section by mistake :P ) Well done and a few more posts like these would be very well received.

Sue

DelBoy,

You are clearly on of lifes positive people and you just get on with the job and make the most of it.

People like you will make the most of every opportunity and you would get on anywhere in the world.

There are some on here who are naturally negative and would find it difficult to get on anywhere in the world.

BTW, What is your profession, I will be staring a new business in July 06 and will need good people, with above all good people skills. PM me if you prefer.

Wow Vince, it only seems the other day when you were waiting on the house sale....my that was a close one wasn't it? You moved over about a month before we came over for our last visit where we met Kay at a meet in 'Glenelg'.

It is so good to hear that you're having a good life. Good luck lad, you have a very positive attitude.

:cool shake:

Masadal - February 4, 2006 07:59 PM (GMT)
Great post Vince.

Like you I have never been to Australia. Steve was over in Perth some 16 years ago, got a visa, then met me before he had a chance to use it.

Also like you we have made the decision to improve the future for our children and ourselves.

If we have as much happiness as you show - then we will be thankful. We look forward to meeting you in Oz.
