Description: How were getting on

Hiya all

Well finally after not having internet for what seems like a lifetime, i'm back on. We landed in Adelaide on 23rd Jan and my initial impresions were good. We were staying at brighton caravan park for 2 weeks so on the way from the airport, driving down brighton road, everything seemed kind of familiar. I dont know if that makes sense to anyone else but because of all the research i'd done and from all the info colleted on this site, i was recognising lots of shops, estate agents and so on. We rented a car straight away from Aussie car rental and it was alittle gem, you really do need a car to get about and the price was really good too. On our second day we were out and about looking for rentals and here is my first major disappointment. OMG, i never realised just what a hassle renting a house actually was over here. We must have looked at about 20 open houses in the first few days and they were all really dated and scruffy. We were looking in loads of different areas and they all seemed the same but not only were you looking at the house so were about 50 other people, then you had to fill in your application, hand it to the estate agent and wait to see it the owner selected you, which we never did because none of the houses were right for us, i mean what is all that about. We couldn't find anything suitable so ending up having to stay an extra week at brighton and finally by chance Paul rang somebody about a job and he told us to ring his friend who was in property management and she had a house which we thought was ideal soooooo after all that we are renting in woodcroft. Second major disappointment is the work situation. There is not much out there at the mo but Paul registered with all the agencies, went right through the phone book and nothing. He was dropping C.V 's off left right and centre and nobody even bothered to get back to him. He'd ring jobs from the paper, they'd take his name and number and still nobody would get back to him which i think is really rude. Eventually he managed to get something but the hours are not so clever, the conditions are crap and the pay is really, really poor but he has to start somewhere. I think Adelaide itself is fantastic, its like we'vejust slipped into the lifestyle. We were expecting to come here and immediatly feel homesick or have major doubts or at least have some sort of reaction but so far so good. We are expecting our furniture to arrive any day now and i'm sooooooo excited. It feels like xmas again. We've been out to afew bbq's, paul has a freind from way back living in hallet cove and they've been great. Inviting us round, introducing us to all their friends and lending us pots, pans and things whilst our stuff clears customs. Met up with afew adelaidebrits aswell which has been great because they are going through exactly the same as us with work, furniture ...... Sorry for such a long post but its been a long long time for me and i NEED to catch up. If anybody is in or near woodcroft area and wants to meet up for coffee or come to my plush pad (joke) then send me a pm and i'll give you the address. Will let you know how things go bu promise the post wont be as long

Hi Babs

Good to hear you're settling in OK.

What trade is Paul in as I must admit that employment is one of our concerns.

Look forward to reading your updates.

Graham

Hiya Graham

Paul is a glazier, has been in the trade for around 20 years but he wasn't looking in particular for glazing jobs but anything that would pay the bills. He has managed to find a job within the glass trade but if something better came along then i think he would take it. Its still too early for him to say whether he really likes it or not but the company offers no incentives to stay. What trade are you /wife in?? I'll let you know about the job situation

take care
