Title: Taking Pets
montia - June 24, 2004 12:24 PM (GMT)
I'm wondering if there is anyone either just made or about to make the move to Oz who are taking any pets with them?
If so would you be able to give us a blow by blow account of your experiences with your 4 legged friends and their migration, any pitfalls you might come across and any advice you can give.
Even things like what you done about bedding for them once they arrive at the quarantine kennels would be helpful.
Any info would be great.
Many thanks. :dancing dog: :dancing dog: :dancing dog:

Hi Terri,
Were not out there yet, but Paddy our dog is booked to fly on the 9th of August.
Were shipping him out with 'Par-Air' total cost is £1,800!!!! :o ......... That's including stuff like fitting of a micro-chip, vaccinations, worming,'front-line', blood tests, pick up from our house,'fit to fly' examination, vet check at the other end,30 days boarding in Melborne and onward flight to Adelaide............
..............I suppose we must love him :D
As far as I know they do everything,we were even told that he didn't need his collar and lead! I imagine that as importing anything(especially food) is quite a minefield, everything is supplied by the shippers to exacting standards. Bedding could be a problem due to possible parasite contamination.
Hope this helps a bit.
Jan, Rob, Emily, David, Joanna and Paddy the dog

Thanks for that guys.
I've been told that they travel with bedding that is destroyed on arrival not only for quarantine reasons but it wouldn't be worth keeping after the journey anyway!!
They take off all collars too in case of them getting caught up while in transit.
I will be getting quotes from Par Air as they seem to be very well recommended and do the door to door service.
We will have two large dogs in crates and one cat in crate to collect so not sure how we would manage the other end if not.
One of my worries is pressure sores from laying on concrete at the kennels so want to be sure they have adequate bedding for their size etc.
Someone has suggested that I can order bedding for them over the internet to be delivered to the quarantine kennels on their arrival.
Fingers crossed for a smooth process for Paddy on Aug 9th. :sign03:

p.s. What size is Paddy as I presume the price goes up the bigger the dog/cat. Why couldn't we have chosen Yorkshire Terriers instead of Dobes??? :D

My friends brought over a boxer dog and two cats a couple of years ago. They all got through the flight ok but lost a lot of condition and weight in quarantine. If I remember right the dog had some bald patches on her elbows from the concrete in the quarantine run, and one of the cats developed a bald patch on her back somehow.
But they are all happy little Aussie animals now living a life of luxury on a 12 acre property, and the dog (who is about 10 or 11 years old) has been rejuvenated.
I also know someone else who brought in a great dane - same probs with loss of condition and weight in quarantine - I think her dog lost about a stone in weight.

Hello Again, Paddy is 79cm nose to base of tail and 56cm top of head to the ground. He is a spinger spaniel x border collie( liver and white) so he's quite lively and robust for his age (11). Also he's a bit tubby so hopefully that will be an advantage during his ordeal!!
Think you probably know more about this than I do!
Oh...... Just remembered, when they have boosters you MUSTN'T include Leptospirisis and MUST have kennel cough as extra.
Also finding a rental place can be alot harder with pets. The kind lady organising our rental property says that you have to agree to pay for the property to be steam cleaned on your departure and either a weighty deposit taken or higher rent charged. Personally I think that the kids will wreck the joint NOT the dog!!
Good Luck with your plans. Jan

You'll find that almost all rental places have to have the carpets steam cleaned anyway before you leave, regardless of whether you have had pets in there or not.
There are some places that are advertised as strictly no pets, but a lot of others will negotiate with you. I've never heard of a higher rent being charged because of pets being in the property, and the deposit (bond) is usually 4 weeks rent in advance, which is lodged with the lands tribunal.
My place was a no pets place - I now have 4 fish, 2 lovebirds, a couple of guinea pigs and a dog.

Thanks guys.
Think it's more the experience side of it that I'm interested to look into now.
I'm lucky that my vet is the ministry vet for this area so he can oversee all that side of things. (Don't like the idea of the kennel cough jab as only time they've had the jab is when they have then gone on to get the condition!! )
It's now looking for things I might not have considered that could make things easier once we are there because we won't be able to go and visit when they are in the kennels due to distance etc. and I know what kennels are like we will just get the " they are doing fine, eating well........." spiel when ringing.
They told me Rum had been eating really well while on 2wks hols but that didn't explain why he'd lost so much weight and muscle definition when we got back?????? <_<
Be interesting to see how others get on while we wait for things to happen this end. :thumbs up:

We're taking our dog 'Henry' who is a German Short Haired Pointer.
He's rather large for his breed and I have been told it will cost approx £3,000 to get him out there - all costs included!!!!!!!! :sign68:
I've had prices to fly the whole family of 5 for less!
But hey, what the heck. He's one of the family too.
We are going in August and are looking at using Par Air as they do the door-to-door service. But we are going to leave him with my Dad for a couple of weeks and have him collected from his house. This will give us a bit more time to find somewhere to rent that will allow dogs and he can catch us up later.
BE WARNED THOUGH! I have been told that if you do not get the dog (or any animal) on a flight before the 1st September it will cost more as the prices are going up :sign68: It's something to do with the airlines costs going up by 50% to ship livestock!
As if there isn't enough to worry about!
Austen - visa's promised for July :sign03:
montia - June 25, 2004 07:02 PM (GMT)
Thanks for that Austen,
Henry is probably a similar size to our boy so probably similar costing. :happy45:
Then theirs one slightly smaller and puss who can sneak in with the dogs if they move over. OMG But like you say they are part of the family, just a very expensive part!
I hope all goes well for Henrys move and would really appreciate you keeping me updated of his progress. I know it will be a very hectic time for you but any info helps.
Best of luck.

p.s. Anyone out there want 3 lodgers for a few months if I send them out before the price rise??? :D

Hi Terri
We've just recently arrived in Adelaide, but we shipped our 2 cats over. I recommend Golden Arrow Shippers they were really great, didn't mind me keep ringing them up to check up on our guys before they left the UK.
We visited them while they were in quarantine in Melbourne, and they were both fine and healthy, no weight loss or anything. The pen they were kept in was a little cramped for 2 cats but for 1 cat it would be fine.
We found no problem renting with 2 cats, the only thing they wanted to know was how old they were. I think they were concerned they were kittens that might claw everything! There are loads of cats in the neighbourhood too, but we keep ours in at night for their own safety if nothing else.
Good luck with yours, they'll be fine.
Theresa

Thanks Theresa
Glad to hear yours have arrived safe and sound from their journey.
I'll have to have a look at Golden Arrow. Not one I've heard of before.
:thumbs up:
