Title: Flying with Singapore?
Description: Beware of 40kg stunt

ken.rooney - April 25, 2006 04:09 AM (GMT)
Hi all i am now in Perth and just thought i would warn people flying with Singapore Airlines. I Flew out to emigrate and have a PR visa that was to be validated for the first time. I checked with the agent when booking the flight am i entitled to 40kg, they said yes if your emigrating first time over there.

I checked in at Manchester Airport and true to form was allowed 40kg, it was actually 42kg but they were ok no problems.

After a 3 day stopover in Singapore i checked in at Singapore Airport, guess what? They said i was only allowed 30kg, they then hit me with a bill for $300+ dollars over £100. I asked to see the manger he said it was 30kg and would not swerve on it, after loads of hassle and raised blood pressure i had to pay the extra or not fly. I am in the process of trying to get my money back but i am not confident. In the mean time i am on a 1 man mission to warn as many people to get it in writing from them before you fly.

There are many post on here about it but the bottom line is the guy at Singapore told me if you would have had it in writing you would have been ok.

I will keep you all informed of what happens but before you book guys get it in writing or beware booking with Singapore if you dont want a big excess baggage bill.

PS i was coming to Adelaide but was offered a good job in Perth so have gone for it.

Why didn't you check your bags straight through at Manchester?
My friend did that and there were no probs.

Good luck in getting the money back.
At least your there we are waiting to sell the house.

Best of luck

Ali

Hi

We also got stung but in a slightly different way.

We did a validation trip before we came over for good.

When we booked our one way tickets with Singapore and asked for the 40k luggage allowance we were refused because the 40k allowance is only available when you use the visa for the first time. As we'd validated 6 months before we lost the extra allowance. They quoted us 32 quid a kilo for extra as well.

If only I'd known I could have bought heaps of extra stuff on the validation trip and left it at my brothers until we returned.

When I flew over with Cathay Pacific, the weight allowance was actually stamped onto the flight tickets. i thought this would be the case with all flights? One to watch out for...

Virgin only allowed us 20kg and were adamant they wouldn't allow any more - emigrating or not. Still p*sses me off 12 months later.

We booked tickets yesterday with Singapore and were told that we would only get the extra baggage allowance on our very first trip - but wouldn't get it on the return leg of the journey! Guess we'll just have to go one way then!
