Title: Cheap Phone Calls?
Description: UK to Oz

Paul & Wendy - May 1, 2006 05:12 PM (GMT)
Hi All,
I'm sure that this has been covered many times, but as the market keeps changing, does anyone know the current cheapest method of phoning Oz from the UK? I have heard people talk about Skipe but dont know much about it. At present, we only need to make a few calls, eg to activate our bank cards etc. Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks
Paul

Paul & Wendy

We currently are in the same situation and also have close family who have already made the move that we speak to on a regular basis.

The inlaws used this service and we too are now using it and it works like a pay as you go mobile in that you open an account and top up the account with the desired funds.

We have found it to be very good and a good example was a call to a mobile in Aus from our landline using this service for a duration of 45mins worked out about £3.00 which isnt bad to a mobile and as you can imagine even cheaper to a land line.

Please see the below link for Alpha Telecom, Its really easy just register online or phone them and your account will be set up in minutes.

Good luck and hope you find a suitable and cheap way to make calls if you dont use the above

Quick search reveals www.telediscount.co.uk @ 1p/min to Oz landline numbers and 13p/minute for Oz mobiles as the cheapest.

I've been using OneTel for years but that seems extortionate at 3p/min

Thanks both for the links - I will investigate them all.
Cheers, Paul :D

My mum buys phone cards from the post office the cheapest one is 5 GBP but you can get 10 and 20 ones too (sorry no pound key  ) not sure how much it is a minute but we talk for hours at a time they last for 3 months from being activated.

I spotted a deal with Talk Talk just before I came here - free calls to Australia - and I got my parents to swap over from BT. :D

There's only certain times they can ring but includes weekends.

I Paid $1.45 for a 10 minute call to england from my landline last month :D ,and it cost me $ 1.65 for a 3 minute call within Oz :sigh: :what?:  now thats just a rip off how can it be dearer to call internally as opposed to internationally?

My Mum gets the post office cards too .. each month they do a special deal where you can phone a certain country between midday and midnight (I think) on weekends for free, ask at the post office and they will tell you where the offer is at the moment, it was Oz in Februaury I think. Don't know how often it comes round! But worth checking .. :D

From here I use Daybreak cards, you can get them from newsagents and the like .. not PO. A $30 usually lasts me a couple of months!

Hi

All our friends & rellies use Telediscount. My MIL had 3 hours to Aus via Telediscount on her last BT bill and was only charged £1.77.

The number for Aus is 08448614141 then follow the instructions using international dialling codes & # key when prompted.

Telediscount operate to lots of countries with different access numbers & charges.

You can but them on line over here too and when you've bought 6 $20 ones you get a free $10 one, you get the number emailed straight to you and can use it straight away. Next free Oz weekend in Jan 07 it tells you on the post office website which funny enough is www.postoffice.co.uk :D

I get people in the UK to use telediscount, you ring 0844 8614141 and follow the instructions. Gather it is 1p a minute, but I've yet to get anyone to check their bills to confirm. You get a message telling you the cost of dialling different countries before you ring the international number.

Hi,

SKYPE - to any other line in Oz is 1p per min. SKYPE to SKYPE FREE.
It's so easy too. Suggest getting hold of a USB phone (PC world etc) and away you go.
