I've asked our doctor about this Kev and he said not a problem, either get the new Oz doctor to write and request them (which could take forever) or put in a written request for copies and (for a fee!) the surgery will provide them for us to take with.

Our doctor will do a print out, but the originals get sent back to the local authority once you advise them that you've left.

Back in 1991 when I emigrated our GP advised me that our medical records were the property of the government, and would be sealed and stored and we would not be allowed access to them.
If this has changed I wonder if I can get my hands on them now.
We've had no probs not having them here. And GP records here are all over the place as you can go to any GP at any time.

Wizzy, medical records in uk are still the property of, I believe, the Secretary of State. You can get copies though, and they are allowed to charge a 'reasonable' fee for copying.
We didn't bother as we have no particular medical worries, but I ended up having to ring from here when the kids were offered immunisations as soon as they started school - I should have brought this info at least!

I dont think it matters if you take them or not.
As wizzy says, you can go to 50 different doctors in one year if you so desire. As soon as i went to see a doc and told them i was diabetic, i got the big once over and loads of different tests etc. and i found the docs here to be far more thorough and far ore interested in sorting you out, than any of the docs i came =across in UK. Be prepared for a shock in the different way doctors treat you here...its a breath of fresh air!!
There might be a change in how they store your medical info over here. There is a pilot test in Tasmania going on right now, where your medicare card is a bit like an eftpos card which when swiped will have all your medical data pop up on a puter screen.

If you have had no serious medical condition I really wouldn`t bother it could be more trouble than its worth, if your on any medication get your GP to write a letter thats what mine did and you`ll be ok, some medications have different names here thats what I found when I tried to get ointment for ( oh dear ) sceriorsis I`ve suffered with it for years now the spelling escapes me

Thanks for all the replies,
I will give the doctor a call and see what they say, not had any serious medical problems but think it would be best to have all the records just in case, especially with the kids.
So much to do, and what seems to not be enough time.
