Hi,
Can anyone give me a rough idea how much cash etc we can bring into the country when we finally come over for good.
Thanks
Lisab

$10,000 in cash in total, no matter what country's notes you are carrying. If you have UK pounds, Aussie dollars, and other currencies it's all added together. I think that's per person, not sure if kids have are allowed though!

Wizzy's correct - though I personally would prefer to transfer the money first and only carry a 'usable' amount on me.

On this subject anyone know if you can transfer a larger amount to obtain a good spot rate but be able to collect a few thousand of it in the UK to take with you, or do you just have to go with the tourist rate.Hope this makes sense,
Thanks

I know what you're asking - but don't think it's possible.
Couple of ways I'd recommend.
1. Use a Nationwide credit card / cash point card when you're there.
2. If you want to take cash - pre order at www.travelex.co.uk and collect it at the airport (before you go through security) before you fly. You get a much better rate than if you buy it at the airport.

Watched a programme a few days ago.
You can bring in more than 10K in cash but you have to declare it and fill out a form. Waht if you lost it though

Agree with Ali you can take any amount in or out of Oz, sums over 10k have to be declared.

The reason you need to declare cash in excess of AUD$10,000 is due to the Financial Transaction Reports Act which aims to prevent the laundering of money.
http://www.austrac.gov.au/ftr_act/index.htmlYou will not be fined or taxed for entering the country with more than $10,000 so long as you declare it on your Passenger Arrival Card.
As others have said there are easier ways to securely travel with money though.

We exchanged a few thousand just before we travelled in M&S as they offered a good rate. We also had the rest of our cash held with HIFX and once our account was active in Oz the money was transferred over - a bit at the time trying to catch a good exchange rate (it went against us though  )
It is a good idea to arrange a visa card BEFORE you leave the UK as you will need this to hire a car in Oz which was one thing we didn't knwo before hand but were glad we did have our UK visa card with us, otherwise we would of been screwed! The bank wouldn't give us a card in Oz as we werent working no matter how much cash we had in the bank account and the car hire people need a card to ensure they can charge you if you disappear I suppose!
