G'day Anne,
Paradise/Athelstone was formerly an area of market gardeners based along the southern banks and flood plains of the River Torrens. A great majority of the population is of Greek and Italian descent. Land has been subdivided into residential allotments over tha past 20-30 years. The area has a reputation of being a good solid family area.
http://www.campbelltown.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=997http://www.id.com.au/campbelltownSA/commpr...0&pg=235&bhcp=1Highbury is similiar area in description to Paradise and Athelstone situated on the opposite side of the River Torrens
http://www.teatreegully.sa.gov.au/http://www.id.com.au/teatreegully/commprof...0&pg=235&bhcp=1Linear Park runs along the Torrens and is great for recreational activites. Plenty of shopping centers wiithin close proximity being Westfield Tea Tree Plaza and the Target Shopping Complex at Newton.
There are other members that live in the areas that may be able to provide you with more detailed information, you could try contacting Diane (Catwithclaws) via this site as she lives in Highbury.
Hope this information is of help.
Jet :)

Highbury is next to Athelstone (I think you were looking at that earlier?). Still very much in the 'leafy suburb' category. Some higher density/lower rent parts but still well thought off. Pretty convenient for the city, Modbury and most of the nothern suburbs.
No-one is ever going to suggest that Paradise is actually paradise, but it's not bad. Still the same general area (east/north east) but covers an area that stretches a bit closer to the city. We lived in a rental quite close to Paradise when we first arrived and although it was never a long term thing (we're country rather than town folk at heart) we found it a good base to get started from.

Hi
Paradise is kind of built up, Highbury is greener. Went for a bike ride along Linear Park at the weekend and there are still some lovely properties alongside the park, all the way through to Klemzig. Is the rental in Highbury you are looking at in Dene Road? If so it is one of a handful of new places that has been built - they are two storey and advertised as "townhouses" which basically means they don't have much garden, if any! They seem to be very well fitted out though from the pictures on the board up outside (they are just up the hill from me!) If you like the look of Highbury, give a real estate guy called Lou Dimech a call or an e-mail - he specialises in Highbury and can probably give you an idea of what else is coming up/available around here
http://www.realestate.com.au/realestate/ag...highbury/louhigIt is definitely worth cultivating a real estate agent such as Lou, as he really has his finger on the pulse of sales/rentals available.
It does depend what you are looking for in terms of size/type of property, local facilities, commuting distances etc. If I remember rightly you said your other half will be commuting to Port Adelaide? I have a temping job starting Thursday this week there so I can tell you EXACTLY how long it takes from Highbury after that!
If you have the addresses, I'd be happy to go take some pics for you if you like?
Diane
EDITED just to make your link work. ;)

Hi Anne
We lived in Paradise when we first arrived and bought in Athelstone shortly after. Both nice leafy suburbs as stated by others. The public transport system into and out of Paradise is also quite good, it links up to the O'Bhan (buses on rails) making for a speedy journey to and from the city. Shops good too - we have a wide range of everything within walking distance so very handy.
My husband works out of Port Adelaide - it takes him around 35/45 mins to reach the office in the morning
Like Di says, Highbury is beautiful too - and just across the river from Paradise/Athelstone.
If you do rent here, you're quite welcome at our North East coffee meets - we are a friendly bunch!
Good luck
Judy
PS If you need another contact for rentals in and around this area, let me know.

This was the view from our front door a few weeks ago, from Highbury looking across towards Athelstone (just worked out how to add the pics so thought I'd put this one up!)

hi all
thanks again for the wealth of information!!
dianne, the photo was georgous...what a veiw, had heard the sunsets were amazing, but it was great to see!!
the rental isnt dene road, though i know the one you mean, we need 4 bedrooms!!
have found two not far from there one in country lane and the other in freshford ave. they both look like theyre close to dene street on the map, do you know these streets?? nice?? i think from the description theyll be just lovely!
hope your temping job goes well dianne...did a bit myself in london whilst on our big OE few years back!! would be very keen to know the travelling distance between highbury and port adelaide, my other half would be travelling at 3pm though and then about 2am so traffic may vary...he did want to know wether or not most of the way is on a motorway or through loads of suburbs(lights etc)??
anyway, really hope we get either of these rentals as i think highbury sounds like a great place....it will depend on hubbys travel time more than anything!!
cheers
anne

Hi Anne
Country Lane is gorgeous - when we first started looking here I thought that was one of the roads I would really like to live in, and I think the one in Freshford Avenue might belong to a friend of mine - I know they had it up for sale, so perhaps they have decided to rent now. If it IS that one, it has a pool although not much garden, but they had three kids and a dog and managed very well there. Both are in great areas and right by the park.
Travelling time to Port Adelaide is 30-40 minutes - I did it yesterday and today and yesterday it was 30 minutes there, 35 back (leaving 0830, returning 1430) and today about 35 there, 30 back (same times!) It's a very straightforward run, straight along Grand Junction Road - 60k limit most of the way, 80k on a few stretches. It's not a motorway but it is dual carriageway all the way - just the ubiquitous traffic lights that hold things up! Port Adelaide is great - especially at the moment before they start the major developments there - lots of free parking, big wide roads, nice pubs and cafes! If you're visiting either of the rentals in Highbury, let me know when and you can drop by for coffee.
