Title: The Adleaide dolphin community
pickledpossum - July 4, 2004 07:47 AM (GMT)
The main reason we went up to Port Adleaide today, was to see the display at the maritime museum about the Port River dolphins that live here.
Imagiine my total disgust when i sat down and watched a short film all about the plight of these poor beasts due to the polluted and toxic waters around the port area.
Some dolphins are affected so much by the polluted waters that they are giving birth to dead or deformed babies (they showed one poor mother trying to revive her dead baby) and their entire habitat up there is at risk of dying out. Apparently big chemical companies are still pumping waste into the sea and i was shocked at the amount of rubbish and debris seen in the water. (even entire cars dumped in it!!!)
Something needs to be done..i am disgusted and couldnt believe my eyes!!! Down here in Hallett Cove it is nothig like that, and is a conservation haven. What the hell is worng with the people up there?
Gawwwd i'm on a real rant about this. I'm that angry i could spit!!

Hi Nicki
We saw a bit about the Port River dolphins when we were at the whale centre in Victor Harbor last summer. I agree it's an absolute tragedy and it's about time the needs of the environment were taken more seriously.

I have just been talking to my landlord. He works for SA Water. He tells me that it is just one big company up there that is the culprit now (i forget the name of them) but also SA Water themselves were blamed for flushing effluent into it, but that will stop in the next 2mths as a new plant is about to open. So some good news i guess.
I find it somewhat ironic that they have regualar dolphin spotting cruises embarking from their keyside one side and companies killing them off on the other!!

Trouble with the Port river is that it's still a port, and has all the bad things that go with that.
Incidentally Hallet Cove gets it share of pollution from the raw sewage that seems to regularly overflow from the treatment works, shutting the beach. Same thing happens at O'Sullivan's Beach occasionally, and when the oil refinery was still operating there were nasty spills of oil and diesel now and then.

You must have been gutted to see the plight of these lovely creatures Nicki....
Have found this site but not sure how to make oneself heard loudly!!
http://www.wdcs.org/dan/publishing.nsf/all...0256BEA003FA25FIn Lewes, where I live, people will stamp their feet, march, waves banners etc regarding conservation (I have been informed that Greenpeace was started here!).
Not sure how people feel about such atrocities in Adelaide but - do they know???
:sigh:

I adore these creatures and i still have to pinch myself each time i see them swim past our house. I feel extremely privileged and we should look after such adorable neighbours!!

Nicki a few years ago I was swimming down at Port Noarlunga with my kids and two dolphins came inside the reef and swam amongst all the bathers in water about 6 feet deep. After the initial shock of seeing two fins coming towards us it was the most special feeling of being with nature I have ever had. I could have touched them they were so close. They did a complete circuit along the shore line and then swam alongside the jetty and along the reef and back out to sea.

Wonderful stuff...
i get ot see them just below my window most days, but not got close enough to touch yet.
I think i'd have a heart attack before they got that close as i'd think they were the worng kinda fins approaching!! :o

There's something so special about two wild creatures choosing to come and spend time with us humans.
But the Jaws music was running through my head at the time.

I think nicki , there is a group who look after the plight of these dolphins, i will check to see if ,i can find out were they are based. It looks like a full moon tonight , dolphins look wonderful , if you see them in the moonlight, we used to check fishing nets at night, and you hear them " blowing" before you see them, very eerie at night, out in the sea ;) .................mm

Great site...but now i am wondering what the names are of the ones i see all the time..they dont mention the ones down here at Hallett Cove...maybe they are a different pod or something.
I'll have to name them myself!!..trouble is i cant tell them apart
There are two regulars... i know...Dolly and Delboy!!!! :bouncing smiles:
wizzywozza - July 4, 2004 11:41 AM (GMT)
Haven't looked at the site properly yet myself but it looks well set out and very interesting. Perhaps Adelaidebrits could club together and adopt a dolphin.
pickledpossum - July 4, 2004 11:42 AM (GMT)
We could adopt the ones in my backyard and you can all come see them!! :thumbs up:

Hi PP,
I have another link for you.
www.wilderness.org.au
This is more of an Australian wide organisation, but is split up into different areas.
A lot of us here are coming to Australia because of the climate and the environment. I think we have a duty to make ourselves aware of the environment that we are living in and do what we can to preserve it.
Recycling and not dumping rubbish is a good starting point
