Hi all,

Just sitting here as you do thinking about lots of things and I had just has the awful thought about car insurance.

When you get to Oz do you have to start your no claims from scratch or will they take into account all the years that you have behaved in the UK (or not as the case may be for some)??

Also what other outlays do you have, road tax, MOT's etc..... Is insurance expensive??????

Oh my god the questions are starting to flow now, BEWARE :what?:

Hi Sam & Derek

When you buy the car you will need to register it. Look under Registrations on here http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/index.asp

You will pay stamp duty depending on the cost of the vehicle - they have a calculator on this site for you to try a couple of figures and see what stamp duty you might end up paying. You will also pay for registration or 'rego' for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months at a time - your choice. This includes 3rd party insurance.

If you want more insurance than just 3rd party you will need to take that out with one of the insurance companies. Cost for us has been $400 - $500 pa for each of our two cars though obviously all the usual things affect this and yours could be more or less accordingly.

No Claims - for us, this was carried over ok without them even sighting our documents, just from the phone call.

There isn't an MOT out here - some states now have something similar and it may be introduced here in time. You wouldn't believe some of hte old bangers you'll see on the roads here!!!

One curious difference we found, when we bought a trailer. Trailers here have their own individual registration plates and are registered in the same way as cars!

Ask your UK car insurer for confirmation of your No Claims Discount when you cease the policy so you have a basis for a reduction in your premiums when you arrive in Australia.

Best regards.
