Here,s some more imfo.
http://www.gawler.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfmI find Gawler, [15 mins from me] a very Sane place ,last of the old style Shopping towns with a High street [murray street] walk up one side and then down the other'.
It still has a lot of old buildings which give it Character, and yes, it do,es have large modern shopping centre, for those with need of such a thing  the schooling is excellent [look at Trinity college web site] and a number of good lutheran schools'.
There are farmers market s on sunday at the old railway station, and at the race track on saturdays, oh and races at the race track every other wednesday.
The residents are a mixture of germanic stock from the early Barossa valley settlers and retired 10pound poms from elizabeth ;) , and are very protective of their town, i know people who hav,nt been to Adelaide in twenty years and you should,nt need to as Gawler is totally self contained. :D .......................mm

I think it depends where you are coming from ..as to how you would find Gawler. We have been a couple of times, first time at 2.00pm on Saturday . It was closed !!
The shops close at 12.00 on Saturdays and no Sunday trading (large supermarket excepted ) :sign68:
If this info doesnt bother you , then you might be the kind of person that will like Gawler . It is close to the Barrossa, and its beautiful scenery etc . My advise would be to do rigporous research before deciding on any area ;)
Good luck

Hi all
We were very tempted to buy property on Andrews Farm, which is not quite as far out as Gawler. It was a nice area, house prices / land was about as good as your going to get it for good area's. We could have afforded the house of our dreams.
BUT
The thought of driving down the Main North Road and back everyday to work (I work at the airport) put me off, its not the nicest road, thousands of traffic lights, I just know it would have done my head in.
Apart from that issue I would have moved there.

I've lived in Gawler for 3 years now. It has a motto, "The Best of Town and Country", which I feel is quite apt. It is a bit more affordable than the inner suburbs but is probably not as ritzy or has more of the features, that most of the I-want-it-all-to-be-perfect-right-now-Adelaidebrits seem to want. It's 38km's from Adelaide, and takes between 45mins and 50 mins to travel to town by car. You can travel by train but the hours during which you can travel may be limited. I travel in and out by car everyday, and with the cost of fuel, that may be a factor if you were to live out here.
When we first moved out here, I was a bit aprehensive, having lived closer to town most of my time here. Money was tight, land was cheaper, but I have two young kids and the schools here are great. Lots of private schools, and some really good state schools. My oldest goes to a primary school with 9 classes, 175 kids, you do the math!
Gawler is not for everybody, but if you are community minded and like things a little slower (a little bit that is, you should see the place on a Friday or Saturday night) then Gawler may suit you.
I would be happy to answer any specific questions if anybody has them.
Regards,

hi thanks for taking time to answer my post,
how did your kids take to their new school and were they welcomed, as i have nightmares of this regular, living near a city doesnt bother me as i live 15 miles from my nearest, and visited it about 6 times in my lifetime,we are moving to adelaide to get off the rat race here. i like the sound of family time ,instead of working to live, live to work, you mentioned a slower pace of life, just how slow do you mean what happens on the main street on a friday and saturday night,?
sorry to throw all these question at you, how do the locals take to new poms been thier? welcome you or booo you out of town,
thanks if you get time to reply ;)

Hi Jayne,
First up, I've been here 25 years now so there is almost no pom left in me, so I couldn't tell how Gawler would treat poms, but it would be fair to say that up until recent times, you weren't considered a local unless you were born there, but with all the new housing developments (search for Evanston Park and Hewett) the town has had an influx of out of towners.
My oldest started school here so, it wasn't like he transferred from another school. But the my opinion would be that the school is great. There are a couple of kids who have come from schools where they were bullied. This school (and most private schools) will not tolerate that, but it is not done with an iron fist.
The main street has half a dozen great pubs and probably 20 - 30 places to eat out, and so has a great atmosphere on a Friday or Saturday night. Sure there has been trouble in the past but I'm a coward and I feel safe there.
It has been said that Gawler is "self contained" and that is an appropriate comment.
If I can be of further assistance, let me know.
