Ed+Fran - July 6, 2004 09:15 PM (GMT)
Hello
I was wondering if anyone can help, how much baggage allowance are you allowed to take when migrating? Also as my husband is a mechanic with loads of tools, we were wondering how and which would be the quickest and cheapest way of transporting them as soon as possible, Could they come on the plane with us?
any help appreicated
thanks

Hi,
Don't know about the tools, but as far as i know you will be allowed uptp 40kg on some airlines providing you have an unused perm resident visa. You are not guaranteed this allowance, but if you send a copy of your passport ( with the visa in place then there is usually no problem).
Don't book with Malaysian if you can avoid it, we've booked with them and they don't allow extra baggage allowance for migrants.
We are flying with them and will only get the standard 20kg, 30kg at a pinch.
Ah ! what a great thing hindsight is
Lee and Alison.( she booked the flights, NOT me )

Thanks for the reply, Its given use something to work on.
Bet you are well chuffed with your flight being on new years eve, the only problem you'll have is that you'll be too knackered to celebrate the new year.
We are just about to send off our visa application, we have passed tra and have been granted for STNI. If you dont mind me asking how long did your visa take to come back.

Hi Fran
Another option would be to send a box of tools over separately. Mr Mover recommended someone for this.

We brought my hubby's tools with us when we emigrated. We flew Qantas back then.
My mates flew on Malaysian a couple of years ago and had no problems bringing double allowance - in fact the 3 of them brought so much over we filled two taxis and their 4WD with it all.

Hubby discovered that if you fly over via the states the baggage allowence is a wopping 64kg each thats booking with travelbag (they even do all the dealing with the airline)

That's one reason we went via the US. Wherever else you may stop on the way, that baggage allowance applies throughout the whole trip. For us that was even the last leg from Sydney to Adelaide.

hi fran, my hubby is also a mechanic(trucks), we are just organising for his tools to go on a container, leaving soon so he is ready to start work when we arrive! (9th sept)
we have booked with singapore airlines and have a 40kg luggage allowance, but i think his tools would use up all that and more. it is £350 to go on a groupage(share someone elses container) plus insurance, and it will take 6-8 weeks.

Lee, you will definitely get the 30kg with Malaysian, I checked. It's sort of an unwritten thing - even for a holiday they will allow 30kg without excess fees applying. We are flying with them too.
Julia :)

Hi,
I did phone Malaysian about this, the person on the other end did mention 30kg, but was very vague. :what?:
Ed & Fran,
the whole process for us took about 10 months ( 136), and about 5 weeks from medicals to visa.
Lee.
