Title: Whales at Middleton

CatWithClaws - July 9, 2006 09:42 AM (GMT)
Finally managed to find a day free to go whale hunting today and if anyone is thinking about it for the kids' school holidays, there are at least three big Southern Right Whales with their calves in Encounter Bay near Middleton - apparently they've been there for about three weeks so far. They are only about 100m off the beach so really easy to see and watch, and with the water being so shallow, it's not just the occasional glimpse, you see the whole ginormous thing, both above and below the waves! Had lunch at Cafe 61 in the small village of Encounter Bay afterwards - voucher in the Entertainment Book for 25% off and excellent fish and chips (and cakes!)

Have to agree that it was amazing to watch. We arrived about 11am today and they could clearly be seen very close to the shore.

Well worth the trip.

We went a couple of weekends ago . We checked on line where there had been sightings and headed on down to Basham beach (between Middleton and Port Elliot ) We just pulled up at the becah and there they were 3 of them , just playing around about 50 m out. We had a lovely day , the kids played on the rocks , I watched the whales and soaked up the winter sun and Ian cycled into Middleton for fish and chips for us all

Lovely :D

We got to see them today at Basham Beach - just before we go back to the UK after our reccie. What an amazing and moving sight. I still can't believe I've seen whales so close up.....

Took the rellies on the local tour of Victor through to Goolwa. The whales were still playing no more than 100 meters off Basham Beach. Mother and calf were both amazing as they breached and spyhopped from the water.
