Your looking at approx $30,000 for an inground concrete type thing (paving and fencing extra) or approx $10,000 for an above ground pool which is sunk into the ground or approx $3,000 for an above ground pool. Fencing is required by law for most things bigger than a paddling pool and also requires planning permission. I think you also need to complete some kind of lifesaving course...a bit of a pain, but a very good idea (lots of stuff like that here)
Incidentally we were told by an experienced property guy that a pool can actually detract value from your home as lots of people won't want the cost and hard work that pools need to stay looking good. Then again it might appeal to incoming Brits :loopy:
It's certainly not pool weather today I can tell you {{{Brrr}}}

I'm having a pool done in our new building, it's freeform fibreglass, which means it can be moulded to any shape you want. Basically a smallish size pool, including filter, coving, solar heating - all ready to go will cost us 28K. I looked at the tiled pools, by far the most luxurious and long lasting, cost around 50-60K all inclusive.
I can vouch that the above ground pools are around 10K, that's without any solar heating or coving/paving, but from our own research they do detract from the value of a property as they are not considered to be of good quality. They are perfectly alright in fact, but it's hard to change people's concepts. I had that problem when wanting to buy a prefab house back in Europe, we decided that public opinion plays a big part in the market....am I blabbering? Whatever you do, get two or three quotes! Did you miss the recent pool and spa exhibition at the Adelaide showgrounds? It was just last weekend...

Hi ya Corker.
We had a pool installed a few months ago.
We used a company called Freeform pools, (excellent service) I don't think they have a web site, all their business is through word of mouth and brochures.
Ours cost $26,000 8 x 4.2 (salt water)
Included was ...
Planning permition
hole dug (maybe extra if they hit rock)
earth dumped
Pool constructed in your Garden (fiberglass pannels)
copeing edge
pumps
filters
solar heating
Barracuda crawler (self cleaning device)
Hover thingmajig on a pole thingy.
a bag of salt
bottle of acid
test equipment.
2 weeks start to finish.

The fencing was extra at $100 a meter.
Still to get a price on the paving  before summer i hope ;)
very cheap and easy to maintaine
If someone buying your house wanted a pool it would increase the value.
If they didnt want a pool it would decrease the value. :loopy:
If Estate agents tell you a pool decreases the value of your house, you should ask them why they put a meter square picture on the board outside your house to try and sell it
I reccomend Barry from Freeform pool (not to be confused with Freedompools)

We had a pool built 4 years ago.
It has been nicknamed "The reservoir" :D
It is a concrete, inground built into the hill side.
The builder (Jim Daniels) is very good but a very slow and meticulous worker.
I was eventually glad we used him as it is one helluva pool and fairly easy to maintain.
Jim alaways gave us an opinion rather than just presume we wanted a standard pool - that helped a lot as the pool is a real feature of the gardens now.
Unfortuantely I think Jim has retired now but if you want I can give him a call.
We have the salt water chlorinator system + solar heating. Cheap on chemicals but it does push up the electric bill a bit.
Basic cost was around $30,000 including the rockwork to the rear of the pool.
In total with fencing, paving electrics and so on I reckon we passed the $50,000 mark.
We added a beach area for the little kids with a bit of a spa air blower thingy in it - great for a quick paddle.
Best thing we ever did,Im always in it in summer, great for coolinof when mowing by jumping off those rocks ;)
I'll stick some pics on when I can work out how to.
The price of our property has increased with the pool - this may be because we have the room.I know that when people squeeze them into their backyards buyers don't like it.
kentcoast - July 17, 2006 12:16 AM (GMT)
The pool is on the 'probably next year' list (mind you, it was on that last year as well :D )
Being apprentice tree-huggers, if we do go for it we'll probably go natural:
Natural pools articleYou probably need a bit more room but if you've got the space, our research suggests it's a winner - reasonable cost to install, minimal running costs, no chemical to worry about and (just personal opinion) looks so much better.

I hope this has worked.
We did send a copy of the first pic to all our friends and family in the UK.
The doggies are Bedlington Terriers - we have 3 now.

;)
When we finished the pool it was nice and hot - suddenly we had lots of visitors - with their bathers and towels ;)
Seriously,we thought we would be the last people to get a pool.
I hate swimming i the sea,the "Jaws" theme runs through my head :(
It really was worth it,we get 6 month's a year use out of it - great for keeping kids busy.
It's not tooooo much work as long as you keep up to it.I'm not one to leave a pool to go green and orrible over winter.I probably spend 40 mins a week on it ,checking chlorine and PH levels and giving it a brush around the edges. The Kreeply Krawly pool vac is a must.
Saying all that I'm just sorting out the plants around the pool, the groundcover has become a bit rampant. I'm going to pull it all out - should be fun perched on those rocks with icy water below me ;)
TIP: We get spiders nesting in the rocks - don't use insecticide sprays - use hairspray on them - they ain't going nowhere and it's a bit safer chemical wise
We do feel lucky to have the pool, something we would have never been able to have in the UK.
Annette - July 18, 2006 01:18 AM (GMT)
Tyke, that is a really nice pool. And your garden is very nice too .... :yeehah: we love our pool as well. It's a nice feature, quite apart from anything else. We've only been here since April, so only got about a month's use out of it so far, but I think it makes the whole place look nice - if I can just get the lights to work, it will look even nicer at night too ;)
BTW- at last I know what those dogs are called - our neighbours have got one and it drives us absolutely up the bloody wall - never, ever stops barking

Thanks Annette
I too enjoy the pool as a feature.
My stepson was married by the side of it 18 months ago - worth it just for that occasion :D
Yep Bedlington Terriers (or Terrorists as I nick name them) can be yappy.
It could be the dog is bored - or have you possums or cats locally - both drive our dogs wild!
We also have a fox that patrols around our house in the small hours, our dogs only feel it their duty to start barking insanely at it and jump on our bed telling their "Mum and Dad" alllll about it :sigh:
For some reason they don't understand .
Annette - July 18, 2006 02:16 AM (GMT)
Tyke, I think it's a combination of both - the owners are semi-retired and go away quite a bit, leaving the poor dog with their student son - who just leaves it outside and is never home. I can see it standing on the patio table barking its little heart out. We do also have possums though... and foxes!
To get back to the pools though, Perry - you're talking to the original Mother Earth here, but not even I think I could share a pool with a whole bunch of creepy crawlies! :68: I do like the idea though. I've always liked a pool that looks natural - this kind of idea is very popular in South Africa. Often, the pool will be finished in a natural looking material or a dark finish - which adds to the illusion. And of course, anyone who has ever lived on a farm would have had one of these anyway - otherwise known as a pond, LOL  ! We over in darkest Africa all grew up swimming in all kinds of unholy holes and green slime-covered irrigation dams or whatever was available and had water in it  ...

Sorry for not sticking to the subject here, but Tyke, can I ask what size lot your house sits on? It's a fantastic pool and looks like it has enough room around it to blend in and not look overpowering, and I was wondering how much land it takes to achieve something like that.
Thanks
Milly :D
CORKER - July 19, 2006 12:39 PM (GMT)
The guy's just been round and quoted $20,000.. 3.3 x 8m .all in...including solar heating!!!!!

We are very lucky to have 2.5 acres :D
A fair proportion of the property is taken by my pet hobby - an olive grove.

Thanks, Tyke. So if a fair bit is an olive grove (sounds like you've got one heck of a property by the way!) can I ask how much (roughly) the garden and pool take up i.e. the bits we can see in the photos? Sorry to be a pain but you've fired my imagination with that pool and it would be good to know how large an area something like that takes.
Thanks, Milly

Hi Milly
I'm guessing that we have about half an acre of actual garden around the house.
It does take some upkeep though.
BTW I've PM'd you.

Hi Corker
Can I ask....who did you have round to quote you?
And are you going to use them or get some more quotes?
Thnx
