Title: WARNING
Description: Your beloved pet pooches

Tidds - July 20, 2006 12:48 PM (GMT)
A warning to people bringing their much loved pooches,

DO NOT GET THEIR YEARLY VACCINATIONS DONE IF THEY ARE DUE WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF THEM FLYING.

The lepto vaccine which is incorporated in their yearly vaccination is a live virus which could show up in the blood tests for flying your pet pooch. Which means AQUIS will not accept them until they give a clear test even though it was through vaccination.
We were told this by our pet shippers about 2 weeks after we'd had our dogs vaccinated so we had everything crossed that it wouldnt show up on the test, luckily it didnt.
This subject was brought up on here some time ago by a member on here but perhaps one of the moderators could put this in FAQ section to warn others if it isn't already in there.......thanking you kindly

Thanks for that - we had our pooches vaccines done in April, so he could go into kennels when we came over on the recce. Hopefully it will have cleared though his system by the time AQIS get their paws on him in a couple of months time.

my dog will be due her booster around about the time we are hoping to go. Will she be allowed to travel if she is overdue her booster or should we get it done 6 months early, if the vet will do that! Anyone know the answer?

We just gave Paddy his booster and left out the Leptospirosis shot. I think they also need an extra not usually given, for Kennel Cough....although I think the timing of this was quite important.

kennel cough vaccination only lasts 6 months and takes 7 days to kick in after being given. My dog recently had this vacc as she had to go to the kennels, she still managed to catch kennel cough though. Vet said it would have been worse had she not had vacc!!!

hi
my dog had a lepto free vaccine in the middle of june, this was a full year from her last one, she has still shown positive, ive had her retested today at the cost of £94 :sign53:
so :sign03: if the percentage stays the same or goes down she is ok to go,
she flies on the 2august, so im now praying,
may i say dog lovers will only understand the despair we go through,

accurate not precise

Please refer to step 7 in your instructions for the importing cats/dogs to Australia, if you have not read this, it can be found here; http://www.daff.gov.au/corporate_docs/publ...rog/infosh2.pdf

The standard vaccinations must be up-to-date, and remain valid throughout transport and quarantine. If the booster is due in the period of transport/quarantine, then get it done (without the leptospira vaccine) approx 1 month pre flight - you are going to be at the vets anyway (blood test).

Remember no lepto shot, if your practice only has a pre-combined brand (there is one brand I can think of which cannot be given without lepto) - ask them to order in separated brands, or go elsewhere. They need DHPPi (or DAPPi) reconstituted with buffered solvent (used for the moggie jabs),saline or water for injections.

Ideally, if you have the time to do this, skip the lepto booster for at least 12 months, the recommended 6 months is not long enough.

If the lepto vaccine was given 6 months or less previous to blood tests, EXPECT to need 2 tests - so get the first test done at 30 days pre-flight or as soon as possible.

Kennel cough vaccination is prob best done previous to (or 1 week after) blood-testing, intra-nasal vaccinations can be erm... exhausting!
Booster intervals for KC are currently changing/disputed (some 6m, some 12m, some still only reckon 3months) and are different between the UK and Oz. All you need is cover for the quarantine, so I would advise go for within 6 months but no less than 2 weeks before travel - but ask your vet to check that the vaccine used will be valid for the period of quarantine. Also shipping agents may want this within a certain period, if your dog is going to be kennelled with them; check with them for details.

Good luck y'all.
