Title: Bricklayers
ohippy - July 13, 2004 07:42 PM (GMT)
My husband and I are contemplating emigrating to SA. Hubby is a brickie so, before I start checking out loads of websites, can anyone tell me where most of the housebuilding is or will be ? Hubby doesn't mind commuting but doesn't really want to leave south of Adelaide if most of the work is in the north ?
Can anyone help ?

Welcome to the site.
I'm not out there yet so I can't help you on your question but I'm sure once the Adelaide crowd get on line they can help you. Have you started the visa process yet?

Hi Ohippy, and welcome to the great dream of Oz. You'll find masses of other people here who are either on their way, or already in Oz.
I've been in Adelaide since last Nov and there seems to be building going on all over the place. The general scheme is to knock an older house down and build two on the block in the inner suburbs, whereas some of the outer suburbs are still being built for the first time!
Building trades seem to be in very short supply and on this site we have come to the conclusion that part of the problem is that once they've made you jump all the hoops to get a visa, you arrive and discover that many tradespeople still need to get a certificate this side before they can work in their trade. Needless to say, at that point many of them go off and change career and Adelaide still doesn't get its extra tradesmen.... With any luck you'll find another brickie or two on here to dicuss all the ins and outs with, so's you know what you're up against.
Do go and have a browse in our faq and links sections, there's loads of info there on all sorts of aspects - then do come back here and feel free to ask away about anything that's bothering you in particular.

Hi Hippy
Welcome to the site.
I think you need to email Ducker who is a member here. You can find her details in the members list. Her husband is a brickie and has never been short of work!! I am sure she would be glad to help with any advice.

Hi hippy, my brother in law arrived just under 2 weeks ago, he is a brickie and got a job within 3 days of getting here. His new employer didn't even ask to see his trade papers, just wanted to know if he had applied for his ABN (Australian Business Number) - he had, so he got an immediate start. There are vacancies north and south of the city, your hubby should be fine. regards adelaidegirl
PS: Current brickies rates are around 27.00 per hour minimum, self employed so you would need to allow, say, 30% to cover tax and medicare

Not started visa process as yet - hubby wanted to check out the work situation first hand first so we're visiting at the end of August. He's concerned about the heat (so we're going in the winter !?!) and how much he could earn as I have no intention of working !! :D

Thanks for all your answers and welcomes !
Hubby tends to work for companies who build on big sites as opposed to houses dotted all over - are there any suburbs north or south nearish the coast where this is happening ? As we are over in August it makes sense to reccie these areas areas for work, schools and house prices etc

Check out the wage net website as that lists the rates for most trades. It gives you a good guideline for what to expect wages wise out in Oz. Having spoken to a few people out there about this the majority of the people say the construction industry is very good to get into as the Unions are very strong out in Oz and you have good support with them.

I also noticed this on the AV Jennings website, they list the developments they are invloved with around Adelaide. I don't know about other developers but maybe check out their websites and they may also list them.

Thanks Snappy for both sites - really useful esp the wage one - didn't know it existed but have saved it for future use !!
Is there a site where you can input a wage gross and see what it would be net ? It's all very well seeing gross salaries but that's not what you have to live on is it ?
